It is actual extreme gerrymandering , which forced politicians to campaign to the extremes of each party, and not the middle, that set up the dynamic Trump exploited. Get rid of extreme gerrymandering and then suddenly politicians have to win more balanced districts by campaign towards the middle to gain center left and center right votes along with independents.
