Here's a chart of the top income tax rate in the U.S. dating back to 1920 including Obama's proposed increase in the tax rate. See that creeping socialism at the end of the chart there?

It's war on entrepreneurs! Soak the rich! Socialism!

It should be noted that these are marginal tax rates. It should also be noted that 40% is still a shitload of money. A shitload. A shitload.

Not that I question anything, but is there a source? Perhaps I missed it?

No. Just providing some perspective for those that accept the word of Larry Kudlow as gospel.

When talking about the unprecedented boom the U.S. has had over the past 30 years I don't believe it to be coincidence that you see those tax rates significantly drop at the start of the boom.

Pete Carroll is the only person who should be taken as gospel.

Hey now. I edited. What the fuck?

God, another reason to just absolutely hate Woodrow Wilson. My God, I hate the legacy of that failed human refuge and his disastrous presidency! At least we're not raising them back up to his levels, but forcing anyone to pay more than 1/4 of their earnings is downright against freedom of property...

FUCK WOODROW WILSON [/wilson tirade]

Wilson was out of office by the time this graph started.

Wilson left office on March 4th, 1921. This graph begins in 1920. PWNED!!

...now, its fair to say that 1920-21 don't reflect Wilson much, because he became incapitated by his stroke in late 1919 while campaigning for the League of Nations. After the stroke, his wife and Attorney General were said to be running the country, but I would wager that the taxes in 1920 were about the same rate they had been since at least 1918.

"Freedom of property" = fascism.

You prove too much. 1/4 is just an arbitrary number you picked out of thin air. There's no reason it can't be 1/2, 1/3, or 9/10. If you are going to argue that some number you arbitrarily picked out of thin air is immoral simply because it is immoral and does not congrue with the natural morality of the universe for reasons I can't understand, then OK. You are a Christian and I am sure you are used to making arguments like this. But don't act like your argument has any real validity.

What you are getting into is that taxation is theft, you are getting into anarchism, and I'm sorry, I'm unwilling to take an anarchist seriously.

Actually, if we are going to go with my religious background, then I will be happy to oblige. I am a Catholic, and I can tell you this:

America has very little in common with the historic values of my faith
-Except for the early development of English Common Law, no where else on Earth can the Catholic Church be seen to have promoted democracy or limited government, or constitutionalism.

-America was founded largely by people who were virulently anti-Catholic.

-Even my hero, John Adams, was strongly prejudiced growing up and I got to read some very juicy writings of his. He later came to view Catholicism with warm regards and even attended Masses in Pennsylvania, the only place aside from Rhode Island where it was tolerated.

-The only semi-prominent Founding Father who was Catholic was John Carroll.

-Most ethnic minorities in America were historically targeted for coming from Catholic countries (Irish, Slavs, Germans, etc.).

Historically, Catholics came to this country, and then proceeded to attack its principles by voting Democrat. It has always been fiscally liberal because the tyranny of government is viewed in Catholic circles as compassionate and charitable.

As a fully assimilated Catholic/European who has no recollection of persecution, I have come to believe in the values of the American experiment, but it is in spite of what the Church has usually done in this country, which is to blindly follow liberals in destroying this country and its principles. My concept of 1/4 is the idea that anything more than 25% is clearly punative, and therefore against the right of property.

Yea no shit. I don't care what anyone says. You bust your ass off and make the sacrifices needed to earn half a million dollars and then let me know how you feel about paying $200,000 in taxes.

Uh yea....and we were also at war. It's always been implicit between the classes in the USA (well until Bush came along that is) that during war the rich supply the money and we supply the blood.

Don't want to fight during war? Well if your rich you can pay 90% of our income to pay for the war effort. Someboday has too. The Draft and high marginal tax rates on the wealthy are great for Democracy at times of war. Gives you a hell of a lot to think about before you start beating the war drums.

You think all these Chickenhawk Republicans would have started beating the war drums if they had to do their patriotic duty at a time of war and pay a 90% marginal tax rate (assuming they are at that income level)? Same with the middle classes knowing that they or their sons could get their asses shot off in war. Those are real good and strong arguments for both the draft and high marginal tax rates during a time of war.
