Charles Manson cult member denied parole.

Probably. Does anyone think this 72 year old is going to get a knife and start stabbing people if she is released?

It’s certainly possible, 72 can be very strong, but… it’s more likely about the message that if you murder you should die in prison, that message many believe would reduce crime.

The California governor, Gavin Newsom, on Tuesday blocked parole for Charles Manson follower Leslie Van Houten, reversing a panel’s recommendation that she be freed after spending a half-century in prison.

Van Houten, 72, “currently poses an unreasonable danger to society if released from prison at this time”, Newsom said in his parole review. It was the fifth time that a California governor has rejected her release.

Does the governor think she would go on a killing spree if released?

Newsom has survived a couple of recall attempts and is up for reelection this year. I expect he's standing on a 72 year old woman's body to bolster his "tough on crime" stance. Sad.

Or the message is "Vote Newsome in '22".

IMO this is fucking political, not about justice. The point of prison isn't merely revenge, it's to protect the public. Executing prisoners isn't revenge, it's eliminating a clear and present danger. However, politicians loooove to play games with this point be it Willie Horton or Leslie Van Houten.

I'm not supporting forgiving mass murderers but is this revenge or justice? Is Van Houten a threat or not? If not, then why continue to pay to keep her in prison?

I agree it’s political, but maybe sometimes doing the right thing is also beneficial politically.

Can't disagree with that but it still doesn't seem just IMHO.

Not a lawyer so all of my knowledge comes for 9 seasons of Law & Order: What is the criteria for granting parole?

I’m no expert on California law, but I don’t think there is any criteria for the governor other than to do what he believes is just.

This woman slaughtered in their beds and smeared their blood all over the walls. She should be freed from prison after she is dead and not a day sooner.

Newsome reversed the Parole Board which had granted Van Houten parole. This is political as stated above: Newsome is standing on a 72 year old woman's body to, ostensibly, prove he's "tough on crime".

She was scheduled to be the youngest woman executed in California when her sentence was overturned. She's been in several trials on this same mass murder.

Is prison revenge or justice? I fully support neutralizing all threats to innocent people be they wacko cults or domestic terrorists.

OTOH, at some point they become harmless if not executed forthwith.

I support life in prison without possibility of parole for many murders. And would like to see the gas chamber brought back for the more hideous murders. The dirtbag hears the pellets hit the acid and the fumes begin to rise plus there should be a flashing sign saying "Think how your victim felt".

Did this POS get a LIFE sentence?

Yes or No

If Manson was still alive should he also be set free?
