President Barack Obama is in a unique position as presidents go, one in four Americans believe he IS a Muslim, he certainly has a closer personal relationship to Islam than any president in the history of our nation. He is also an American, and claims to be Christian. The leader of the free world, holder of the most powerful office in the world. In the words of Nixon... Now is the place, now is the time!
Obama missed a rare and unique opportunity which could have probably only existed for someone with his particular background, to use leadership and conviction of principles to bridge the gap between Muslims and Christians in America. He could have delivered a speech to challenge opponents and proponents of the mosque to come together and have the dialogue, he could have spoken to the importance of debate in our country, and how we have historically worked together to sort through our differences, and do what is right.
Instead of using his leadership to try and bring two sides together, he used this opportunity to pull out the political hammer and bash the right again. Instead of a call for both sides to reconcile differences, he chose to take a moral high horse stand, and call opponents intolerant bigots who seek to suppress religious freedom. In doing so, he further divided people, and squandered an opportunity for possible immortal greatness, I think. All due to a complete lack of leadership ability. A great leader would have seized the moment, turned this into a positive, made America stronger and greater by taking a courageous stand. Instead, we get a typical divisive political hack.
