Chagos Islands dispute: UK obliged to end control - UN

The UK should end its control of the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean "as rapidly as possible", the UN's highest court has said.

Mauritius claims it was forced to give up the islands - now a British overseas territory - in 1965 in exchange for independence, which it gained in 1968.

The International Court of Justice said the islands were not lawfully separated from the former colony of Mauritius.

The court's advisory opinion, delivered in The Hague, is not legally binding.

The UK's Foreign Office is yet to respond to the opinion.

The events surrounding Diego Garcia were ethnic cleansing by the Brits- plain and simple. It was a criminal act in which the United States was complicit. Various legal judgements concur. The Brits will froth and dally, whine and blame, prevaricate and pose- but they will have to withdraw from the Chagos Islands eventually.
The weaker they become on the international stage the sooner that will be.
They can kiss Gibraltar goodbye too, along with the Malvinas.

The UN's highest court has called on Britain to quickly cede control over a chain of islands in the Indian Ocean, the largest of which houses a strategically important United States military base, to Mauritius.

Of course, if the Brits refuse to comply with the decision of the UN's highest court then they will be trashing their own future with regard to using it .
 
If Diego Garcia is part of this my bet is the UK tells the Hague to shove their ruling up their ass. The International Court there is an utter joke with no enforcement authority over anything. It's a useless appendage like the UN...

They were not Londoners. Folks who live their lives in that culture are not loud in public and do not display their conversations for strangers to overhear. You didn’t hear much English because you did not engage with Londoners.
