CBC’s Cleaver: We would be ‘marching on the White House’ if Obama weren’t president

As chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, [Cleaver] has been at odds with President Barack Obama over his administration’s response to the soaring unemployment rate in the African-American community.

Nearing 17 percent, joblessness among blacks is at a three-decade high and almost twice the size of the overall unemployment rate. The black caucus wants the president to do more.

But the group’s efforts are freighted with political sensitivities, given Obama’s unique role as the first African-American occupant of the White House and the sometimes untethered animosity that his election has triggered.

“If (former President) Bill Clinton had been in the White House and had failed to address this problem, we probably would be marching on the White House,” Cleaver said. “There is a less-volatile reaction in the CBC because nobody wants to do anything that would empower the people who hate the president.”

so far, so true

Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It is already tomorrow in Australia.

as usual onceler is too afraid to discuss the issues

So, the next time you post one of your many posts saying that another poster is bumping their own thread...we can assume that you're afraid to "discuss the issues?"

Can we then conclude that you've been afraid to discuss them the many times previously, when you posted that very thing?

no, that would be dishonest as i only do so to the troll's thread and those threads are troll threads.

and once again, onceler is too afraid to discuss the topic of the thread. no surprise.

I get what Cleaver is saying. Yes there is irony that they feel a black President isn't doing enough to serve the black community while not wanting to protest him because he's black. I don't agree with Cleaver but I think in his mind he feels a lot of people don't like Obama because of his race. Therefore the CBC doesn't want to join those racists in protesting against Obama. Cleaver obviously states though they are not happy with Obama policy wise.

so clinton would get different treatment based on the color of his skin? all because of a few racists. i believe you're mostly right, but i think the issue goes deeper than that. unless they really are so cowardly that they cave in because of a few racists.

I can't speak for the man but to me he is saying blacks have been through a lot in this country from slavery to segeration etc. and they have now put a black man in the White House which is a great accomplishment and they don't want to be the one's to tear him down when so many other people are trying. However having a black man as President isn't doing them any good if he is ignoring the needs of their community. So he's openly stating the dilemma they find themselves in.

that is what i think is the heart of the issue. and imo, that is racism. they are focusing on his skin color more than his policies. it should not even be a dilemma, putting race above the welfare of the country is what they supposedly stand against, yet here they are doing exactly what they claim harms america.
