Can a Neighborhood Watchman be a Vigilante???

You both deserve major Kudos for being foster parents. My sister and bro-inlaw have done that and USF is right about the stories that would break your heart and you're right about the challenges!

The best kids I ever worked with, were the hard core street kids.
Oh; they would test you, to see what you were made of and where you stood, but if you kept your word and were honest, they would stand up for you - both verbally and physically.
These were the kids that would scare the hell out of most people and probably did; but I was always honest with everything, whether it was going to be a good outcome or a really bad one.
These are the kind of kids that when they respected you, they really respected you. I would have a kid acting out, in the day room, who wouldn't redirect his behavior and I would end up having to tell him to take a time out in his room. He would cuss me out all the way down to his room and probably continue cussing me out, after I closed the door.
BUT - Later on that night, after everyone was secured down and I was getting ready to go home; would tap on the window, as I passed by telling them all goodnight, and he would apologize to me, tell me he was having a bad day, and would want to know if we could talk, when I came back to work.
Some staff would try to "buy" kids compliance, by doing "hookups"; ie: candy, snacks, an extra phone call, etc.
I never did hookups, the kids knew it, and they would try; but all I had to do is give them ny "are you stupid look" and they would laugh.
Sometimes I'll be somewhere, I'll hear my name called and it will turn out to be one of my "kids".
They'll want to tell me about their life, what they're doing, and to say thanks.
They'll tell me what a pain in the ass I was; but that I was always fair and didn't play favorites and that they were glad that I was their caseworker.
Those moments are a bigger reward, then any payday ever was.

Oh I know exactly what you mean. It' snice when your career is more than a profession, that it's a vocation too.

I've never had more of a good time, then when I go to work at a place that I like working at.

It's been proven that:
People will work longer at a place they enjoy working at, for less money; then they will at a place they hate working at, for more money.
