evince does not realize that most frames for houses are made out of wood, most insulation comes from paper products, as does all paper products. I am sure she is prepared to do without all of those things

PETERSHAM, Mass. – *In a towering forest of centuries-old eastern hemlocks, it's easy to miss one of the tree's nemeses. No larger than a speck of pepper, the Hemlock woolly adelgid spends its life on the underside of needles sucking sap, eventually killing the tree.
The bug is one in an expanding army of insects draining the life out of forests from New England to the West Coast. Aided by global trade, a warming climate and drought-weakened trees, the invaders have become one of the greatest threats to biodiversity in the United States.
Scientists say they already are driving some tree species toward extinction and are causing billions of dollars a year in damage — and the situation is expected to worsen.
"They are one of the few things that can actually eliminate a forest tree species in pretty short order — within years," said Harvard University ecologist David Orwig as he walked past dead hemlocks scattered across the university's 5.8-square-mile research forest in Petersham.
This scourge is projected to put 63 percent of the country's forest at risk through 2027 and carries a cost of several billion dollars annually in dead tree removal, declining property values and timber industry losses, according to a peer-reviewed study this year in Ecological Applications.

I'm familiar with the kind of evolution* you refer to sir.
The problem is; invasive foreign species can transform, and in some cases decimate a formerly well balance ecosystem.

- Leaping carp now infest both the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, and threaten Lake Michigan through the Illinois Waterway, Lake Huron through the Straits of Mackinac, & perhaps the St. Lawrence Seaway. The problem there is they're displacing native species.
- Zebra mussels are already causing problems in the U.S.
- Purple loosestrife is causing problems in my native New York.

It is a mistake to conflate the more familiar form of evolution recognized by Herbert Spencer but often attributed to Charles Darwin, with the change you mention.
The former is a refinement within a species; faster cheetahs result in swifter more agile gazelles.

The devastation to ecosystems due to detrimental invasive species isn't necessarily natural.
- The leaping carp entered our ecosystems from breached containment barriers.
- Zebra mussels are believed to have arrived here aboard trans-Atlantic ships, in their bilge or ballast tanks.

We may be on the cusp of being able to solve it; stabilize our native ecosystems.

BUT !!

We're not likely to bring back the Dodo; Jurassic Park scenario aside.

* Evolution occurs both within nature, and beyond it. Technology, an unnatural entity, also evolves.

In religious cults it's often "god's word", as interpreted by the shaman, etc.

But yes. In the U.S., science is widely (though not universally) considered the criterion of truth.

And we must take care to exercise discretion in that regard. Science is not infallible. Newton / Einstein the obvious example.
 
what about the Chinese rapacious desires for Asian hardwoods? Or how about deforestation of the Amazon?

Too many people seeking too few resources..Population growth will ironically kill us all no matter what we do.

there is alot we should be doing for alternatives to clear cut farming; and finding more native plants to use for food supplies.

Heck down here in Florida -most people want green lawns like we have back in Maryland -so they use Bermuda and St. Augustine grasses. They take a lot of water, and a lot of pest control,and fertilizer -for what? lawns?

The new ecology is using native plants -it looks more like rock gardens, but it still gives shade and relief from solar heating.
Not exactly the same thing -but i think you see the point. Target your enviornmentalism to the enviornment you have

... BECAUSE switching to an electric car can actually INCREASE pollution.

How?

If the "from the grid" electricity used to charge the Prius battery is generated by burning coal; it can add more atmospheric pollution (carbon, methyl-mercury, etc) than a comparable gasoline powered car.

Beware tree huggers.
