Bush commutes former Border Patrol agents' prison terms

The two ex-lawmen had been convicted of shooting an unarmed Mexican drug smuggler. The case has been a cause celebre among illegal-immigration foes.[By Josh Meyer

Reporting from Washington -- In perhaps his final acts of clemency, President Bush today commuted the prison terms of two former U.S. Border Patrol agents convicted of shooting an unarmed Mexican drug smuggler who fled across the Rio Grande after they stopped a van with 743 pounds of marijuana.

The Justice Department announced that Bush has granted clemency to former Texas-based agents Jose Alonso Compean and Ignacio "Nacho" Ramos. As is usually the case in such executive grants, the announcement included no explanation, and the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In a case that ignited a fierce debate about illegal immigration, the two men were sentenced to prison terms of 12 years and 11 years, respectively, after being found guilty of assault with a dangerous weapon, defacing a crime scene and violating the smuggler's rights. The men, who tried to cover up the 2005 shooting, were given three years of supervised release after their prison terms and a $2,000 fine each.

According to the Justice Department, Bush's grant of clemency means that the men's prison sentences will "expire" on March 20, leaving intact the three-year terms of supervised release with all conditions and the fines.

LOL

Who is next for a pardon?

What, you are sad because they weren't crooks, or some terrorist..

these two deserved to be pardoned, but a commute is a good start.

Finally, Ramos and Compean deserved better than this, and our border patrol agents now work in fear that if they take action to defend themselves they would be prosecuted for it.

The evidence against these guys was specious. The bullet couldn't even be associated to the gun (in fact they could associate it to 9 different types but not to any single gun at all), doctors talk about the infection the guy would have had if he really had waited two weeks before seeking medical attention and about a million other things. These guys were railroaded and the prosecution was bereft of a conscious.

The reality is, the dude ran away and wasn't seen for two weeks yet we take his word he had no gun when character witnesses that were not allowed to speak at the trial spoke about how he never crossed without one...

Sick.

They deserved to be pardoned, what I want to see is everyone in the Bush Admin. get a pardon. That should make the libtards go fucking nuts.

They deserved to go to prison. The prison sentence was excessive because of retarded mandatory minimums (thanks conservatards), but they definitely deserved to spend time.

they went to prison...now they will be out.

and not everything is liberal and conservative..sheesh.

They didn't. They were politically prosecuted during the time frame where Bush was pushing his amnesty plan.

If you were convicted with this little evidence I would have argued for your release too. It was preposterous.

Only if he was a conservative :)
