OBAMA TO STEPHEN PADDOCK - "YES WE CAN"
About a year and a half into the Obama administration, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives issued an opinion letter, giving the go-ahead to an after-market accessory that allows the user to “bump fire” a semi-automatic rifle.
A company called Slide Fire sent its patented replacement shoulder stock to ATF’s Firearms Technology Branch, asking for an evaluation of the device.
The ATF, in reply, wrote: “Your letter advises that the stock (referenced in this reply as a ‘bump stock’) is intended to assist persons whose hands have limited mobility to ‘bump fire’ an AR-15 type rifle.”
The device replaces the factory stock and grip. The replacement stock moves back and forth with the gun's recoil, allowing it to fire rapidly and continuously as the trigger repeatedly is bumped into the shooter’s finger. A switch allows the user to select semi-automatic fire (one shot for each trigger pull) or the more rapid “bump fire.”
According to the ATF’s June 2010 letter: “The stock has no automatically functioning mechanical parts or springs and performs no automatic mechanical function when installed. In order to use the device, the shooter must apply constant forward pressure with the non-shooting hands and constant rearward pressure with the shooting hand. Accordingly, we find that the ‘bump stock’ is a firearm part and is not regulated as a firearm under the Gun Control Act or the National Firearms Act.”
Slide Fire has posted a copy of the approval letter on its website.
The company also notes, “By definition, our current rifle stocks are not adjustable stocks or trigger manipulation devices.”
An ATF agent told CBS News that the Las Vegas shooter had equipped 12 of the rifles found in his hotel room with bump stocks.

Don't be shocked if you get "that's one thing with which I disagreed" from the Obama supporters.
Ya I don't see why they're necessary save for perhaps to defend against government tyranny but if that's the case we can use semi auto to storm the armories which will be necessary anyways.

I'm something of a gun nut myself, and I had never heard of these things until this thing happened. But now EVERYONE knows what they are and how they work. So go ahead and ban them. Hell, even the military version of the AR-15 isn't FULLY automatic(3 position selector switch: safe, semi-auto, and 3 round burst). You don't put this piece of shit on a firearm you care about. It burns out barrels and eats ammo like a pot smoker with the munchies. I think a better way would be to put a a federal tax stamp on it and require an FFL, that way you can at least keep track of them. But you can bet some enterprising little maniac is firing up the 3D printer right now, and I predict Chicago is going to sound like a bad day in Kandahar Province before long.
