Democrats set Friday vote on infrastructure bill, further delay massive spending bill

"As many as seven moderate Democrats were holdouts on the social safety net bill focused on President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better agenda, two sources told NBC News.

Before they vote for the bill, those lawmakers want the Congressional Budget Office to provide an estimate about how much the legislation is going to cost, which Democratic leaders have made clear would not be ready by Friday.

A senior Democratic aide said that it could take weeks to calculate. Two estimates released Thursday weren’t enough to assuage the moderates’ doubts about adding to the nation’s deficit. A new White House estimate that said the bill was "fully paid for” and the nonpartisan Joint Committee on Taxation estimates that the Build Back Better bill would raise $1.47 trillion from new taxes.

The skeptical group of Democrats included Reps. Stephanie Murphy, of Florida, Ed Case, of Hawaii, Jared Golden, of Maine, Kurt Schrader, of Oregon, Abigail Spanberger, of Virginia, Kathleen Rice, of New York and Carolyn Bourdeaux, of Georgia.

The lawmakers met with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Friday morning, but two sources suggested they were “very dug in.”

On Thursday, Biden called numerous House members to garner support. In public remarks, he called on the House to vote "right now."

For months, Democrats have encountered obstacles negotiating these two bills because of the intra-party divisions between moderate and progressive lawmakers. Leaders have had to postpone votes on the infrastructure package several times because of the insistence by progressives that they only vote on it in tandem with the Build Back Better bill.

Pelosi said at her weekly press conference Thursday that she was “very unhappy” that the House didn’t pass the infrastructure measure last week.

“We're going to pass both bills, but in order to do so, we have to have votes for both bills,” she said.

Hi Politalker,

What about the Senate? I think Pelosi knows the bills are in trouble there and is just hoping she can blame the failure on the other chamber.

Dumb bitch doesnt even know how to cook. She is even wrong on that. Take room temp stakes and put them right on the hottest side of the grill and get some good bark on them......then move them to the cool side of the grill to get that inside done. Oh, and dont use gas. Good old Charcoal is still the best. ;)

that initial seer is the magic

Absolutely. I rub mine down with a little olive oil and season them with Emeril's steak seasoning and they always turn out fantastic.

I do olive oil salt and pepper then a pat of butter at the end. Stole the butter idea from Ruth's Chris Steakouse.

The vast majority of American voters have no idea what's in the bill, and neither do the vast majority of Congress critters including the Democrats who are voting for it. That's a fact.

Projection on your part since they don't know what's in it to begin with.

Right back at ya, DOUBLE since you're the one always raving about shooting everyone that disagrees with you. Democracy by the way doesn't come at the end of a gun barrel...

It just might have to come to that...

Never tried it, maybe I will. I dunno though,....I'm a die hard charcoal grill man for my steak and baked potato.
Precook a steak in the oven? That's just silly and wasteful.... Don't do it...;)

Indeed.

My son, who can really grill a rib-eye, says to never cook a steak in the oven...something about there being no "sear" when cooked in the oven. Evidently the sear keeps the juices in the steak.

Your son is correct....some might choose to finish it in the oven if it's very thick, but the initial sear is pretty important...Unless you don't care what it tastes like...;)

My father told me long ago that if I learned how to cook, I would be doing a lot of it, so I never learned.

I can grill some and cook scrambled eggs...that’s it.

My two sons are good cooks, my daughter isn’t. Before I married, I ate out almost every meal.

Your dad was right when he mentioned doing a lot of it once you get going...;) I always encourage everyone to learn to cook the basics...and cook them well....They need to bring back home ec...and industrial arts...;)

Hello Sirthinksalot,

Hi Politalker,

What about the Senate? I think Pelosi knows the bills are in trouble there and is just hoping she can blame the failure on the other chamber.

I think it's quite common to underestimate Nancy Pelosi, but the reality is that she is quite excellent at her extremely difficult job.

Somehow, she managed to pull off a victory last night in getting progressives to agree to go ahead and sign off on the Infrastructure Bill, which has already been approved by the Senate, and now goes to President Biden's desk for approval.

That's a huge win for Democrats.

Pelosi got Democrats of all stripes to agree that they will work out any remaining differences on the Build Back Better Bill, now that they are so close on that one. They have committed to sign off on that one during the week of Nov 15th.

""Welcome to my world," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told reporters, adding, "We are not a lockstep party.""

"House passage of the social and environment package would send it to the Senate, where it faces certain changes and more Democratic drama. That's chiefly because of demands by Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona to contain the measure's costs and curb or drop some of its initiatives.

Moderates have forced leaders to slash the roughly 2,100-page measure to around half its original $3.5 trillion size. Republicans oppose it as too expensive and damaging to the economy.

The package would provide large numbers of Americans with assistance to pay for health care, raising children and caring for elderly people at home. The package would provide $555 billion in tax breaks encouraging cleaner energy and electric vehicles. Democrats added provisions in recent days restoring a new paid family leave program and work permits for millions of immigrants.

Much of the package's cost would be covered with higher taxes on wealthier Americans and large corporations."

Democrats pass $1 trillion US infrastructure bill, giving Biden much-needed win

Yep,....You have to have the sear. Some people go crazy with marinades but I dont,....but I do marinade.

I will take a large bowl and put in a couple of cups of red cooking wine, some olive oil, small pinch of garlic powder, pinch of salt n pepper, teaspoon of lemon juice, 3 tbl spoons of woosh sauce and a couple tblspoons of soy sauce. Throw the steaks in with the marinade , cover it, and let it sit in the fridge for a few hours.

Pull them out, pat them dry, and let them sit for at least 45 minutes to get up to room temp. Brush olive oil on both sides, season each side with emerils steak seasoning.

Throw them in the middle of a screaming hot grill to put the bark on them,.....then move them to the cool side of the grill for a couple minutes to get that inside done to your desired liking. I use the crotch between the thumb and index finger trick to get my desired doneness. ALWAYS use charcoal!

There,... now all you bastids have my recipe!

I NEVER cooked when I was younger but as I got older I actually started to like it more and more. IMO its an easy way to show people you care about them and love them. Its not JUST about the food,....its about the feeling that goes into it and wanting to do something nice for someone IMO.

Hi Politalker,

You understand that both chambers of Congress need to pass the exact same bill, correct? If it is changed in the Senate, the House will need to pass it again.

Yep,....You have to have the sear. Some people go crazy with marinades but I dont,....but I do marinade.

That brine is a horrible misuse of a steak.

Course salt and cracked pepper. Throw them in the middle of a screaming hot grill to put the bark on them,.....

Fixed it for ya!
