What many Brits object to about the EU is that it removes power further and further from the people. It is designed to do that, and it's been doing it for 20+ years. Americans wouldn't tolerate that for twenty minutes.
What may finish off the EU is the one-size-fits-all euro (which Britain has never belonged to). The euro exchange rate suits northern European countries very well, but for Mediterranean countries it's slow strangulation.
'Nationalism' has very little to do with it.
