The proper thing to say is he would have been 'more susceptible' to this bout of pneumonia 'due to prior lung scarring during 9/11'.

If you have pneumonia prior, especially more than once you are then more susceptible to it and same goes if you are lungs are damaged by various means, including smoking, or various chemical and other lung damage.
