An army group in Turkey says it has taken control of the country, with bridges closed in Istanbul and aircraft flying low over Ankara. PM Binali Yildirim earlier denounced an "illegal action" by a military "group", stressing it was not a coup. He said that the government remained in charge. Traffic has been stopped from crossing both the Bosphorus and Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridges in Istanbul. There are reports of gunshots in the capital Ankara.

Gunfire was also heard outside Istanbul police HQ and tanks are said to be stationed outside Istanbul airport. All flights are cancelled. CNN Turk reported that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was "safe" but did not elaborate. A statement from the military group read out on NTV television said: "The power in the country has been seized in its entirety." Who represents the group remains uncertain. A Turkish presidential source told Reuters that the statement was not authorised by the military command.

Mr Yildirim told NTV by telephone: "We are working on the possibility of an attempt. We will not allow this attempt. "Those who are in this illegal act will pay the highest price," he added, saying it would not be correct to describe the move as a "coup". He said: "There was an illegal act by a group within the military that was acting out of the chain of military command. Our people should know that we will not allow any activity that would harm democracy." There are reports Turkey's top general has been taken hostage at the military HQ.

The military in Turkey overthrows the government about every 20 years. It was a matter of time.

I don't think they know what they're getting themselves into this time though. Erdogan is a lot more powerful than his predecessors, and he's purged the military a lot in order to avoid another repeat of this.

Erdogan may have been arrested, according to the reddit live stream. These reports are extremely tentative.

EDIT: This is apparently wrong.

how big is this - of a following?
Maybe the "group" is hoping to get the rest of the military to follow suit

It has happened before. The 1960 coup was by a group of hotheaded young officers, they managed to get the rest of the military in line. Don't know if it will be successful this time.

It is apparently not a coup by the big whigs in the military.

Err, we know!! Looks like Boris was right about Erdogan.
There was a young fellow from Ankara
Who was a terrific wankerer
Till he sowed his wild oats
With the help of a goat
But he didn’t even stop to thankera.

Gunfire in Istanbul, not the capitol Ankara.

The Turkish military has announced it has taken control and overthrown the government of Recep Erdogan as troops round up police and attack the capital Ankara. Eyewitnesses have reported attack helicopters firing machine guns in the capital Ankara in a bid to depose the Islamic government. The military said they have taken control in order to protect human rights, however, prime minister Binali Yildirim said only a 'faction' was involved. Fast attack jets and helicopters were heard above Ankara and Istanbul after the military confirmed they had seized control of the country. Istanbul's Bosphorus Bridge and Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge were both closed after the military deployed roadblocks. Tracer fire from Turkish military helicopters was spotted over Ankara with fast attack jets flying combat air patrols over the city.
President Erdogan is reported 'as safe'. A spokesman for the Turkish government claimed the coup has been unsuccessful and they are still in power.

Eyewitnesses have posted photographs of a large explosion in the capital Ankara amid the Turkish military takeover

If the military coup fails, it's just going to consolidate Erdogan's power even more. If it succeeds, democracy will probably be restored in a few years. Not sure what to think. It's too bad that Turkey can't ever seem to find itself a stable democracy.
