She broke Russian laws at a bad time. Putin needed someone to mistreat showing how tough he is. It was her bad luck . Putin has her in a position for prisoner exchanges. The worse he treats her, the more valuable she is. Biden is trying to help her, but Putin is demanding too much. Griner actually means nothing to Putin.

These are unjust laws. We can call them on that. And we can call them on clearly using Griner for political purposes.

I don't care what a country's laws are: she had CBD for insomnia. As an insomniac, I can empathize. To try to characterize 10 years of hard labor for an offense like that as "just" is incomprehensible to me. This is tragic, imo.

And I hate to see righties "celebrate" this kind of treatment of an American by an oppressive regime.

There are political prisoners all over the world w/ things that are even flimsier than this. We can call this out as oppressive - and not justify it by saying something like, oh well, their law is their law.

I mostly agree with you.

But she should have known better than to carry an illegal narcotic that is a serious offense to possess, into a country like Russia.

Of course the punishment is insanely out of proportion to the crime.

Should she be punished? Yes.

A year in jail maybe. Two at the outside. And banned from ever entering the country again.

That would have represented a major financial hit to her.

But these people who are acting gleeful about her long, harsh sentence should be ashamed.
