This is a reasonably objective evaluation of the capabilities of NK artillery to 'flatten' Seoul. Very surprising indeed considering it is in the Daily Kos!!

I think that what everyone is missing is that this is no secret. South Korea knew for decades that this was a potential scenario. Surely they must have some sort of countermeasure.
 
This has all been working around one key question: can North Korea “flatten Seoul” with artillery? The short answer is “no”.

This is the same conclusion reached by many others when discussing the situation. Ex:

"Artillery is not that lethal," says Anthony Cordesman, who holds the Arleigh A. Burke Chair in Strategy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), and is a national security analyst for ABC News. "It takes a long time for it to produce the densities of fire to go beyond terrorism and harassment."

That said, if we deal with the lack of reality of a “flattening by artillery” scenario, we still must deal with some painful realities. A conflict with North Korea will still have large numbers of casualties — particularly on the North Korean side

The thing that Kim has to comprehend is that while North Korea can inflict heavy damage on South Korea, it can only do so until the Capital of North Korea is LITERALLY flattened and instantly rendered lifeless for 20,000 years if nukes are deemed needed where even birds that fly over it fall out of the sky instantly. So what this comes down too is the meaning of the word flattened as used by North Korea and the USA.......................

One missile off of a USA nuke sub is every artillery round from North Korea exploded for 24 hours a day for a hundred years.

Not much of a contest, and when the war is over, in 30 seconds, there no longer is a border, just a unified Korea, with USA military bases in the former capitol of North Korea. Watching China

That presumes that Russia and Chins would stand idly by, they won't so it's not even a option. McArthur wants to nuke the North Koreans and Truman sacked him.

China has already said that they will watch, and so will Russia. No one wants Kim to have nukes, so it is in their best interest for the USA to unite Korea. This is not Vietnam.

North Korea is like a kid, with a slingshot attacking a United States military base. Are nukes needed to stop the kid? Really that is a good comparison between the size difference here. And as for nukes, China will do nothing if tactical nukes are used. Tactical nukes are just bombs with big yields. There is not even a reason to launch big nukes, not to stop a kid with a slingshot
