Boris Johnson, Britain’s former prime minister and one of the most divisive leaders of his generation, has resigned as a member of Parliament after accusing a committee of attempting to “drive me out,” he said in a letter on Friday.

The former Conservative party leader said he was was “bewildered and appalled” after receiving a letter from the from a House of Commons committee, which is investigating whether he lied to British lawmakers over lockdown-breaking parties during the pandemic, known as ‘Partygate.’

“I have today written to my association in Uxbridge and South Ruislip to say that I am stepping down forthwith and triggering an immediate by-election,” he said.

Boris Johnson’s name will go down in history, but for none of the reasons he wants

His previous fame and electoral success could not protect him from crashing down to earth as the final months of his premiership became dogged in scandals so severe that his position eventually became untenable.

What might be less well-known outside of the UK is what happened next. For all that Johnson’s supporters agitated for his return when his successor Liz Truss was forced to resign, when push came to shove, his own party thought he was damaged goods and blocked any return to the throne.

Since then, it’s only been his most loyal footsoldiers that have continued banging the Johnson drum.

When Johnson gave evidence to a parliamentary committee – with a Conservative majority – investigating whether or not he deliberately misled parliament over Partygate, you could count his supporters in the room on one hand. They muttered and tutted at others in the room as Johnson was grilled for hours, but they represented a minority view of the people that once supported Johnson whole-heartedly.

Johnson’s dwindling influence was further underscored as he led a futile rebellion against Sunak’s new Brexit deal, something Johnson has publicly criticized. Orthodox thinking in the Conservative party now is that Sunak has saved Brexit from being a total disaster and that Johnson looks slightly ridiculous protesting Sunak’s strategy.

Funny how you are always claiming that I've no business commenting on US politics, yet you think that you're somehow different commenting on UK politics. It's pretty clear that you've not the first clue about the state of play regarding the egregious report cobbled together by Harriet Harman and I'm not going to enlighten you. That is apart from pointing out that she should have been removed from politics a long time ago for her support for the Paedophile Information Exchange.

Boris Johnson’s out, and the Tories are at war.

Friday, June 9th, Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson resigned as a member of Parliament just after learning that an investigation into his flouting of Covid-19 rules while he was in office would result in sanctions for the MP.

Johnson’s announcement represents a stunning fall from grace for the populist leader elected in a 2019 landslide to “get Brexit done.” It’s also created further turmoil in his Conservative party, already beset by chaos in the wake of Johnson’s resignation as prime minister last September. Though the government under Prime Minister Rishi Sunak hasn’t suffered the scandals of Johnson and his immediate successor Liz Truss’ tenures, the Tory party is widely unpopular, which is likely to affect the by-elections Johnson’s exit will trigger.

Though Johnson’s exit from Parliament is not as imminently cataclysmic as his resignation as the leader of the party last year, it makes clear the internal divisions among Tories, further endangering an already-unpopular party ahead of general elections likely to take place next year. Such dissent in the ranks undermines Sunak’s authority even as he attempts to restore the UK’s status on the world stage.

The Conservative party’s chaotic year has just gotten worse

I don't nest on a UK board making snide remarks

Plus he has a lot of blood in his hands with the Debacle in Ukraine.

Something to admire about a parliamentary system.

He will be back soon enough, if there was a General Election tomorrow he'd win in a landslide victory.

Sadly there is almost no one in the rump of the UK with the interest or skill for leadership....voting back in a proven failure is certainly possible.
