Blue Cross Stands Firm on Marriage

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina canceled the family insurance policies of gay and lesbian couples in the state, explaining that the policies are meant for married couples.

Those policies were sold to 20 same-sex couples through the federal insurance marketplace.

The language in those policies, including the terms “spouse” and “opposite sex,” are geared towards opposite-sex married couples, said state Insurance Department spokeswoman Kerry Hall

As they should....marriage meant one thing when they sold the insurance...you can't change the definition and expect them the honor the new circumstances...

It seems to me they are going to lose out on a big percent of business if they continue this policy, but if the contract spells it out, then they have a right to stick with it.

In some instances, it'll work out cheaper for people to purchase 2 individual policies.

It has more to do with managing rates. Profit is generally flat. Given that there are few same sex "marriages" in NC its not going to make much difference.

I hope they get the proper attentions for their commitment to customers.
