Can you believe this shit? We have serious economic problems but we can afford to take $75 million from tax payers to blow a hole in the moon to see if there is ice. They aren't even sure there is ice there. I could have saved a lot more and gave $78,999,999 back for the cause of making jobs for people who have none. There have been people screaming that the money spent on NASA should be used elsewhere since I can remember.

The 2009 federal budget includes $515.4 billion dollars for the Dept of Defense. NASA's budget for teh same time period is $17.4 billion.

Rather than shut down NASA, why not cut the military's budget by 5%?

That would save us over $25 billion.

Comets do it all the time. The moon doesn't mind, I promise you. I also know that if we don't find water up there it's going to cost a hell of a lot more to ship it all there.

The old "times are bad so we have to suspend all science funding" argument. If anything, science funding is one of the best ways to BOOST the economy and employment.

Although, honestly, I'm not really too keen on the moon base. I think it's just going to cost a lot of money, have practically no scientific value, and do very little to advance space exploration. Sort of like the ISS. Man made missions simply have little practical scientific value. And missions like the ISS and the Moon Base are basically just make work projects for space exploration so that we can pretend we're doing something serious.

A space-base does have a great deal of utility for humans, though. If humanity gets wiped out on Earth, then that means we can keep on. However, it's going to take a century or so of large funding to get enough people there so that we have a decent stable from a genetic point of view. And the moon isn't the best location for such a base because there are a number of doomsday scenarios that would put anyone on the moon in jeopardy as well.

IMHO, if we're not establishing a permanent Mars base we may as well not be wasting the money.

The moon base goes along with the space station in getting us out there. Most of the energy in space flight is getting us out of our own atmosphere. Once we get out into space, the trips get cheaper and easier.
