Black caucus says it will allow Republicans

WASHINGTON – The Congressional Black Caucus says it will allow two recently elected black Republicans to join the group if they ask.

The all-Democratic caucus had wavered over the issue since Tim Scott of South Carolina and Allen West of Florida were elected last week. Chairwoman Barbara Lee had pointed to the group's liberal mission statement as a potential point of conflict.

But in a statement Tuesday, the group said the two would be welcomed if they request membership.

West has said he wants to join to bring a new perspective to the group. Scott hasn't decided.

The 42-member caucus has had two Republican members in its four-decade history. The most recent black Republican in Congress, J.C. Watts of Oklahoma, declined to join.

The black caucus includes a handful of moderates but is mostly made up of liberals serving in safe Democratic districts. The addition of Republicans would likely shake up its weekly meetings and require its leaders to navigate around them to discuss strategy.

West, a former Army officer, said in an interview he's eager to steer the group away from "failing liberal social welfare policies that have caused the demise of the black community."

West said the black caucus must confront overwhelming issues in the African-American community including high teen pregnancy, incarceration and unemployment rates. Those are issues that require "competence and character," not the caucus' "monolithic voice that continues to promote victimization and dependence."

good for him....if he happened to be white, he would of course be called a racist by the left

I kind of waiver on this. Barbara Lee says the mission statement is one of liberal beliefs/values. Ok, I see nothing wrong with that. If there was a conservative group in congress how open would they be to wanting to let liberals in?

But with the name of CBC it does seem somewhat strange to want to keep other blacks in Congress out short of changing the groups name to Congressional Liberals Black Caucus.

You have to hand it to him for being willing to stick his toe in those waters. He will likely just be reviled and avoided. I cannot imagine being that out numbered and have hope to ever really be heard, let alone impact anyones thinking in such a partisan group.

absolutely correct...he is joining because, as he says, they are a monolithic body that purports to speak for basically all black issues...he brings diversity to the group

In general diversity of thought is a good thing and in this case I think its great he's trying to bring that perspective to the BCC.

But let me play devil's advocate if you have a group of like minded individuals focused on a particular goal is bringing in someone who does not share that mindset a good thing?

not always, but in this case, as you rightly pointed out and as scott points out to diversify the monolithic voice that purports to speak for blacks....there is simply no other group like this in congress, there isn't a uber liberal lefty group, nor is there is an uber righty tighty group...this group aims to not only speak about liberal issues, which they can do without forming a race based group, they claim to speak for blacks and speak almost entirely as a monolithic voice when it comes to those issues

The CBC doesn't purport to speak for blacks in general. The CBC purports to speak for the CBC. The addition of a single right-wing member is not going to change the voice of the CBC one iota.

And, to the extent you are correct that there are no other similar groups, who gives a shit? If white members of Congress want to start the CCC they can go right ahead and do so. No one is stopping them.

Finally, to the extent the CBC is "monolithic," that's because until this year there haven't been any black members of Congress for over a decade and even when J.C. was around, he wanted nothing to do with the group.

Ha! The proof will be in the pudding. Don't be surprised if these black Republicans discover the name of this group should in all actuality be:

The Liberal Congressional Black Caucaus.

They are going to "allow" Black Republicans in?

How...errr...Black of them...?

QUOTE=NigelTufnel;728005]The CBC doesn't purport to speak for blacks in general. The CBC purports to speak for the CBC.

The Congressional Black Caucus was formed in 1969 when the 13 black members of the U.S. House of Representatives joined together to strengthen their efforts to address the legislative concerns of black and minority citizens. African-American representatives had increased in number from six in 1966 to nine, following the 1969 elections. Those members believed that a black caucus in Congress, speaking with a single voice, would provide political influence and visibility far beyond their numbers.

yeah, you're right, they also speak for mexicans.... if they don't speak for blacks in general and they are not for blacks in general....why do they need to have a color based group that singles out solely one skin pigment?

The addition of a single right-wing member is not going to change the voice of the CBC one iota.

so you say, but will see and your opinions are not fact....scott believes you're wrong and i think he knows better than you :)

right nigel....you're so full of shit on this hilarious...just the other day you said i was a DICK for wanting to join the caucus...and its hilarious that you say you would have no problem with a white caucus....your posts clearly indicate teh contrary

they have always been monolithic, try not to pass meadowmuffins so openly

Considering all the horseshit he swallows, is it any wonder?

lol....a group of black reps, which are the voice of the people, form a race based group, but nigel would have us believe they don't speak for blacks in general....its clear they believe they do

Well, West (not Scott) is an idiot if he thinks that the voice of the CBC will change if it has 40 Democrats and 1 Republican member. Let's get real. The voice of the CBC will be the same. It's composition will be slightly different, that's about it.

You would be a dick for wanting to join the caucus. What the fuck does that have to do with whether white members of Congress who were so inclined can start their own fucking group if they wish? And I wouldn't really have a problem with it other than the fact that it's fucking stupid but people do stupid shit all the time.

they have always been monolithic, try not to pass meadowmuffins so openly

The CBC has always been monolithic because there have been a grand total of three black Republican members of Congress since the Congressional Black Caucus was created in 1969 until this election.

The CBC does not purport to speak for anyone other than the CBC. If it did, it wouldn't be providing AN African American perspective on public policy but rather would claim to provide THE African American perspective.

Get a grip, man. You really have some serious race issues that you need to work out. It isn't healthy.

I'm not hanging my hat on anything. You have asserted that the CBC purports to be the monolithic voice that speaks for black people. In support of this assertion you provide the above statement. That statement does not support your position. Instead, it shows that CBC expressly does not purport to do what you claim.

In fact, your position is absurd and the suggestion that any single black person or group of black people speaks for all black people is itself pretty fucking offensive. No one would ever suggest that a white person purports to speak for all white people or that a group of white people (say the Republican Study Group) purports to speak for all white people.

As I said, you have some pretty fucked up race issues that you need to work out. It's really weird.

One good thing about Allen Wests election is that it is another boundary of racism that will be broken, we should not have your race define what your political ideology will be.

I dislike his politics, but am glad to see this steriotype being broken.

huh...it absolutely supports my position and its factual they have been speaking with a monolithic voice concerning the issues regarding african americans...perhaps you should google what monolithic means

their own website say they speak for them, good lord, you really need to calm down when it comes to discussing race issues, everytime you get into a discussion you get extremely upset. and your last sentence is typical of how you end up in these discussions....

seriously, calm down and put away the hate and let's rationally discuss this.

there is no other group that is an elected body, whose function is to speak and represent a group of people, that specifically created a sub group representing ONLY one group - blacks - and the president says they do in fact - provides an African American perspective on public policy....

so they really speak for mexicans?
