Byrd's CLAIMS to have denounced the Klan and the timeline contradict. By his own words, he was 23 to 24 years old when he started recruiting members. That would put the year somewhere in 1940 or 1941. When he ran for the House of Representatives in 1952, Byrd stated "after about a year, I became disinterested, quit paying my dues, and dropped my membership in the organization. Following the timeline, that would put this claim as having taken place in 1942 to maybe early 1943. Funny how in December, 1944, Byrd, someone that claimed to have become "disinterested" in the Klan around 1943 and no longer a member, wrote to Mississippi Senator Theodore Bilbo calling black "race mongrels" claiming he'd never fight side by side with one in reference to WW II. What else is interesting is that it took him 50 years 1992) before he claimed it was "the greatest mistake I ever made".
