This article is a year old but still relevant and speaks to why so many people on the left no longer like him.
The analogy I think of is that many treat him like the left’s version of a RINO. The mindset is that politics is essentially war, and there’s no room for anyone on the left not showing total loyalty.

I don't know. Who "on the left" are you referring to? Because I lean left and I don't hate Maher - as a matter of fact, I agree with him most of the time.
