Big bucks at gun show, small change for victims

FEW CARE: A donation box to aid victims sits nearly empty yesterday at the Arizona gun show near where Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot in last weekend's Tucson rampage.

Thousands of weapons enthusiasts, many openly packing heat, crammed into an Arizona gun show chock full of high-powered rifles and semiautomatic pistols yesterday -- a mere 13 miles away from last weekend's rampage.

Despite the 4,500 who filed into the Crossroads of the West Gun Show at the Pima County Fairgrounds throughout the day, a donation box at the entrance for the six dead and 13 wounded, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, sat nearly empty.

The audacious showing came as Giffords continued her miraculous recovery, with doctors removing her ventilator by inserting a tube in her windpipe to allow her to breathe without the help of machines

Some 7,000 people are expected to attend the two-day gun extravaganza that features more than 100 vendors hawking massive arsenals of AK-47s, assault weapons, sniper gear and ammo.

"When guns are in the news, it inspires gun owners to get out and defend their Second and First Amendment rights," said show organizer Bob Templeton, adding that turnout was higher than expected.

Several vendors offered Glocks and 33-round extended clips -- the type used by Jared Lee Loughner, 22, in his Jan. 8 shooting rampage -- although sales were average.

New York Rep. Carolyn McCarthy plans to introduce legislation this week outlawing magazines that carry more than 10 rounds.

Meanwhile, a victim from last week's massacre, Eric Fuller, was arrested yesterday after allegedly saying "you're dead" to a gun-rights supporter as the two were speaking at a forum being taped to air on ABC today, the Arizona Republic said.

And a Long Island man, James Guarnaccio, 55, was arrested for allegedly making 40 harassing calls over a two-day span to the district office of Rep. Gary Ackerman (D-Queens).

Sorry Capt, but I respond to bullshit. Its in my nature.

The article included "The audacious showing...".

What is audacious about continuing a show that has been months in the planning? Should the people not be allowed to shop for guns because one lone lunatic committed a horrendous crime? Should the organizers and venders lose thousands of dollars because of the act of one madman nearby?

This is a standard tactic of anti-gun people. When a lunatic or criminal does something, the rest of the world should completely stop.

This is the same logic that had people protesting the annual NRA meeting in Denver after the Columbine shootings.

Its trite nonsense.

"At the "Crossroads of the West" gun show Saturday, University of Arizona junior Kiely Katz opened her plaid Burberry shoulder bag, took out a wallet shaped like a Japanese animated cat and plunked down her credit card for a $549 Glock 31 semiautomatic handgun.

"I've been wanting one for a while; I've been shooting since I was little," Katz, 21, told Steve Zacher of Glockmeister, a gun dealership in Mesa, Ariz. The company's slogan - Got Glock? (the question mark replaced by a gun barrel) - was written on the display case near "Team Glock" baseball caps.

Katz was among the thousands of patrons who streamed into the Pima County Fairgrounds, a 10-mile drive southeast of Tucson..."

..."The events at the Safeway store were tragic and unprecedented, but they weren't about lawful gun ownership," said Bob Templeton, the president of Crossroads. "It was about a mentally ill person who gained access to a firearm he shouldn't have."

Although the timing of the Tucson gun show was "unfortunate," he said, organizers decided after speaking with county officials and the dealers that the show should go on. They held a moment of silence and Templeton told the crowd: "As we contemplate the tragic events of a week ago, our hearts go out to the people impacted."...

...Federal gun-buying laws have been blamed by authorities for leading to movement of guns to convicted felons and other prohibited purchasers. Although patrons must fill out paperwork and be cleared through an FBI database to buy a gun from a registered dealer, ordinary residents are allowed to sell guns to one another at gun shows without any background checks..."

From: http://www.justfacts.com/guncontrol.asp

A 1993 nationwide survey of 4,977 households found that over the previous five years, at least 0.5% of households had members who had used a gun for defense during a situation in which they thought someone "almost certainly would have been killed" if they "had not used a gun for protection." Applied to the U.S. population, this amounts to 162,000 such incidents per year. This figure excludes all "military service, police work, or work as a security guard."

Based on survey data from the U.S. Department of Justice, roughly 5,340,000 violent crimes were committed in the United States during 2008. These include simple/aggravated assaults, robberies, sexual assaults, rapes, and murders.[13] [14] [15] Of these, about 436,000 or 8% were committed by offenders visibly armed with a gun.

Based on survey data from a 2000 study published in the Journal of Quantitative Criminology,[17] U.S. civilians use guns to defend themselves and others from crime at least 989,883 times per year.

A 1982 survey of male felons in 11 state prisons dispersed across the U.S. found:
• 34% had been "scared off, shot at, wounded, or captured by an armed victim"
• 40% had decided not to commit a crime because they "knew or believed that the victim was carrying a gun"
• 69% personally knew other criminals who had been "scared off, shot at, wounded, or captured by an armed victim"[

So you agree with Ted Nugent, who seems to be saying that the only course open to Americans is to proliferate gun ownership, so in any given situation, more people can shoot when gunfire erupts?

..."murdering psychotics have slaughtered innocent Americans at shopping malls, schools, restaurants, churches and courthouses, and now a grocery store parking lot.

No place is safe.

Knowing this, we must do what is prudent to protect ourselves and our loved ones..."

The next thing will be that they'll be against car shows; because some idiot used his in an irresposible way.

If gunfire erupts, I had certainly rather be able to defend myself than to be forced to hide and be at the gunman's mercy until the police arrived.

So you don't think more people should be armed in public places?

I didn't say that at all. In fact, I have a CCW permit. I think all 50 states should have a "Shall Issue" CCW permit law.

So you don't know, or won't say.

Got it.

No, I don't know. I know that it isn't all 50 states, which was what I said I thought would be best.

I didn't feel the need to do your research for you. I figured you would find it and post a few links.
