Let's start with those...
Home defense. It makes perfect sense to have a semi-automatic weapon for that be it a pistol, shotgun, or rifle. Trying to operate a bolt-action, pump, break-block, or single-action firearm at close range is simply stupid if you have the choice of a semi-automatic as an alternative. It's one less thing you have to be thinking about and doing in a situation where you have a lot on your plate.
