Biden raises Taiwan and human rights with Xi Jinping in first phone call

--- The conversation came hours after the US president announced a new Pentagon taskforce on China ---

Joe Biden has affirmed the US’s tough line on China’s human rights abuses and regional expansionism in his first phone call with president Xi Jinping since taking office.

Xi defended China’s policies as matters of sovereignty, but told the US leader confrontation would be “a disaster”, and called for the two sides to re-establish the means to avoid misjudgments, according to state media.

The call came just hours after the announcement of Biden’s establishment of a Pentagon task force on China and a senior state department official meeting in person with Taiwan’s representative to the US.

This isnt just mitary confrontation,.. (and he pushing for action on Taiwan here as well) it's
"cooperative framework" talk..meaning ..roll over roll over unless you stand up to them on trade

Biden is not going to stand up -he's being "strategic patience"

It is weird how you want confrontation with China, but are obsequious to Vladimir Putin.

Biden does not sound like a CCP stooge. I am shocked conservatives lied about it

Biden also voiced "fundamental" concerns about Beijing's "coercive and unfair" trade practices, as well as about human rights issues, including China's crackdown in Hong Kong and treatment of Muslims in Xinjiang, and its increasingly assertive actions in Asia, including toward Taiwan.

White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Biden also expressed concern about China's lack of transparency over the coronavirus.

All the rights issues Biden mentioned were ones Beijing has explicitly told his administration it should stay out of.

you almost got it .
China NEEDS to be confronted -they are hegemonic monsters with hard and soft power.
they are malign bullies where they can get away with it..constantly pushing the envelope

Russia is not an economic threat, but they have a quality military.
Instead of trying to separate Russia away from China (triangulation) our policies and sanctions act to force them together..ie. Russiaphobia

Wow

There is yapping, and there is doing, these are two very different things.

I need to see Washington doing something about the Empire.

I dont expect to see much.

I find it very interesting that after years of bashing Trump for the tariffs, especially the ones against China and the EU, that the cabal who now runs our foreign policy are trying to get something in return for dropping them. The Chinese at least will be having none of that.

so no need to ask me again about the disparate treatment towards Russia and China

I believe in a U.S. foreign policy which at least takes into account justice, human rights, international law, and respect for international standards of conduct.

THe Chinese are not interested in any of that, so the question still stands.
