As mayor of Burlington, Sanders played a pivotal role supporting the Chabad public menorah at city hall, which was contested by the local ACLU chapter. He publicly inaugurated the Hanukkah menorah in 1983 and his early and strong support played a significant role in the now widespread public menorah celebrations around the globe.
