BERKELEY (CBS SF) — Despite heated opposition from homeless advocates, the Berkeley city council voted Tuesday night in favor of a strict set of laws that will ban people from taking up more than 2 square feet of space on sidewalks.

The laws ban people from sleeping in planter beds, leaving any personal belongings in trees, and also tighten existing bans on public urination and defecation.

Vice Mayor Linda Maio says the rules are meant to help the homeless.

“This is designed to create welcoming sidewalks for everyone,” Maio said.

The city plans to build new public bathrooms downtown, and create storage units for personal belongings.

Six council members voted in favor of the ordinances, while three others did not vote, BerkeleySide tweeted late Tuesday night.

You know it must be bad when the liberal city of Berkeley bans the homeless from sleeping on the sidewalks...guess even liberals have a breaking point when dealing with trash.

But, but you liberals are supposed to bend over backwards for the downtrodden....I guess your kind don't like the homeless sleeping and shitting on the sidewalks.

Does this thread indicate that you do? The ordinances are created not to punish homeless people, but to insure that they have access to bathrooms and shelters, my racist friend.

If the bathrooms and storage were built first and then the regs took effect then perhaps you could say this was not punitive. But it was not so the heartless liberals are trying to roust the urban outdoorsman and when successful there will be no need to build unless there is a quiet deal with merchants to relieve them the burdon of public access to bathrooms. Stay tuned and lets see how this plays out.

They'll most likely end up with what we have here in SF where the public toilets are used as drug and prostitution spots and still plenty of sh*t on the ground.
