Berkeley betrays its free speech legacy


The battle over free speech in Berkeley has flipped the two sides in the old generation gap.

When the Free Speech Movement got rolling at UC Berkeley in the 1960s, the whole point was winning the right to speak out about civil rights, sex, the Vietnam War or anything else on your mind.

It was youth versus “the man.”

Now it’s youth demanding the shutdown, and the man expressing outrage at the death of free speech.

And the cops being sent in to protect it.

How’s that for a reversal?

And what are these kids upset about? Ann Coulter? Milo Yiannopoulos? David Horowitz? All second-string cable commentators at best.

The descendants of those who fought for free speech now say there shouldn’t be speech unless it fits their own political agenda. If it doesn’t, then it’s not free speech, it’s hate speech — and it must be stopped, even if it means violence and damage.

How the hell do you get away with that?

The Free Speech Movement was born in Berkeley, and now, it seems, it’s being buried in Berkeley.

it is the age old balancing act of liberty and security and of course there are limits on free speech as well.

If you can't yell fire in a theater then maybe you shouldn't host right wing authoritarians at a liberal temple, knowing it will lead to destruction.

When I was in High School we had full on industrial shop, divided in wood and metal.
One year as junior cut the tip off his finger in the tablesaw.
The next year the same guy cut the tip off another finger.

No law suits, in fact when he healed up they let him use power tools again.

Now all the shops are gone from all the schools because of...liability. So..., yeah, let's kill all the lawyers. (metaphorically yurt you fucking retard)

The school is cancelling the speakers so they don't get sued.

It's illegal to riot. But since only liberal socialists riot and loot, it's ok, according to you. Liberals are violent pigs that riot and loot all the time, and you excuse this illegal behavior :palm:

If someone dies during a riot, the person that killed them is responsible for their death.

According to socialist pig logic, free speech doesn't exist in "liberal temples" or anywhere liberals threaten violence.

Where in the first amendment is there freedom from religion?

So having the choice of not hearing someone speak isn't sufficient you want no one to be able to hear them. Very "progressive"
 
Even Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren have spoken out against this and said if you don't like her don't go or go and ask questions to defeat her ideas. Amazing how many people who would otherwise claim to support free speech and non violence are supporting the suppression of speech by violent threats.
