Bannon's beliefs about Asians in tech are as wrong as they are racist

Donald Trump was a guest on Breitbart News Daily on Nov. 5, 2015, a show hosted by his newly appointed chief strategist Steve Bannon. The choice to bring Bannon into the White House has been met with outrage, given Bannon's outspoken white supremacist and misogynistic viewpoints.

"I think that's terrible," Trump said on the show, referring to immigrants from Asia who went to "Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Penn, Stanford, all the greats" and then got thrown out of the country. "We have to be careful of that, Steve. You know, we have to keep our talented people in this country."

When Trump asked Bannon if he agreed with this sentiment. Rather than answer Trump's question, Bannon pointed to how many Asians hold leadership positions in Silicon Valley.

"When two-thirds or three-quarters of the CEOs in Silicon Valley are from South Asia or from Asia, I think ..." Bannon said, the Huffington Post reported. "A country is more than an economy. We're a civic society."

First of all, he has the facts wrong. In 2015, Asians made up 21% of leadership at Apple and Facebook, 23% of leadership at Google, 22.4% of leadership at Microsoft, and 28% of leadership at Twitter, according to Engadget. These numbers are not even close to the upwards of 75% Bannon suggested. The statement itself is also discriminatory. The implication that there is such thing as "too many" Asians is racist.

Saying there are too many Asians is racist? It's interesting, that's what they do at our state Universities specifically Cal Berkeley and UCLA and Asian (males) by far are overrepresented in tech. All of a sudden they don't refer to a lack of people of color they refer to under representative communities i.e. not Asians.

America is not a nation based around anything as crass as a race or a culture. We are an artificial nation with no culture, crafted purely from law. That's the most beautiful thing about America, it doesn't carry any of that baggage that the rest of the world has, the curse that people imagine themselves to be part of a nation and different from others, when in fact we are all equal. The monoculturalists will never respect this. They will continue to pursue supremacist beliefs, in violation of the principles upon which America was founded.

California has one of the largest Asian populations out of any state. You can hardly day Asians are more overrepresented than whites.

"The belief that there can be too many of any ethnic group is a disconcerting belief to be held by someone who may have the power to greatly influence the president of the United States."

Bannon's happy when Asians educated here go back to their native countries because he thinks there are too many in Silicon Valley leadership positions. He said "we're a civic society."

What does he mean by "civic society"?

To me it's an issue at the grad school level where foreign students, who certainly have gained acceptance by merit, but are not taxpayers, nor are their parents, dominate admissions in STEM fields. I'm of the opinion that if the choice boils down to a US candidate who is qualified vs a foreign student with better test scores than the US student should receive preference in most cases. Now Private schools can admit who they want and I certainly understand the importance of academic diversity and competition, and that certainly merits consideration but so does ones citizen status at tax payer funded schools.

The thing is many/most of these foreign students pay full freight. Schools want/need the money so...

That's another thing. Universities blow through money like it was nothing. Between administrative bloat, always a new building to be built and services that have nothing to do with instruction or research that a lot can be done to reduce cost and this attitude that prevails that they always have a ready source of income from students and their families.

I lack a racist detecting antenna like most liberals possess, so I have no idea what he meant or how it was a racist statement lol.

i personally believe its because we gave universities a blank check in the form of student loans. What is to stop them from raising prices if cost is not an issue?

How is it racist to say that there are too many Asians yet not racist to say that there are too many whites, or conversely not enough minorities, in a particular occupation?

They are Asian-AMERICANS .. and didn't get their positions through white privilege.

Of course what he said was racist.

His claims are just racist .. they're also grossly inaccurate.

STEVE BANNON’S RACIST COMMENTS ABOUT SILICON VALLEY ARE ALSO WILDLY INACCURATE

He says “two-thirds or three-quarters” of Silicon Valley C.E.O.s are Asian. Not true.

Oh so lets just get rid of student loans and make sure only 5% of the nation gets a college education. Student Loans are not the problem. The ROI on them is around $20:$1.

Asian makes are over represented in tech leadership but they aren't two thirds. What's happening to Asians in schools is very real though.
