#BankingWhileBlack: Bank employee calls police on black man trying to cash a check

If you had a point you should have said you had a point
Ok...sorry you didn't understand.... '
That bank is Very strict, btw....even after banking there over 40 years...Metal detectors, etc. You forget your ID, you go home, get it, come back. I like that...I do think they overreacted in calling the police. They admitted their error ...I like that...
Get a bank account, everyone. Just do it....

Trying to defend the bank's racism I see

I didn't say he should be forced to. Did I? But if he doesn't have one (anywhere), why not?
Everyone should have a bank account...Do you disagree?
Yes, my brother has never had a bank account, he doesn’t trust banks. He functions just fine.

No I don't agree. this is America and there is no reason why people should conform to your corporate standards

Not a good idea, however for the general public...I won't be‘ recommending that...to any one....
(How wonderful never to need one...wwwoooowwww...very impressive)

When I moved to Asheville I had a bank account in Texas, they did have my bank here

Got my first pay check, went to 3 different banks had ID they would not cash it!!!!

Had nothing to do with my race!!!!

But since I am not black I couldn't raise a hissy fit about it and say I'm a victim..I guess

Golly gee, because the check wasn't FRAUDULENT?? It was his PAYCHECK!

So my bank has called to confirm when I wrote checks for over a grand to white people. they also called to confirm when I wrote large checks to black people. That particular bank is a bit of a PITA. They gave me a hard time trying to deposit a check from one of my business accounts into another business account as if that somehow is part of a grand conspiracy to rob myself. I have known one of the VP's of the bank since I was a child and have called her while standing right there in front of the teller when they were giving me too much non-sense static. I only get it at the most convenient branch to me that is in a bad part of town so I get the paranoid thing, but common sense should tell you that transferring money from one business account to the other is neither uncommon nor high risk for fraud.

The account the check is drawn on is from the bank where they are cashing the check, an account is not required.

Charge him a fee for not having an account. That's legal. The choice will be his not something forced on him.

Things part of this tell me he doesn't have a bank account anywhere.

There is no federal law or regulation that requires national banks to cash checks for noncustomers. Most banks have policies that allow check cashing services only for customers who have an account with them in order to protect both themselves and their customers from forgeries.

Once a national bank cashes a check that has been forged by a noncustomer, they may lose money if they cannot collect from the person who cashed the check.

As long as he never needs credit. One of my brothers was always like that and when they went to pull his credit to finance a boat, he had nothing on his credit except that they had checked it. I ended up buying and financing it in my name for the few months until his big payout on a personal injury claim came through.

Or charge them a fee if they don't have an account.

What I find interesting is that the one trying to cash the check didn't go to HIS bank. Tells me he doesn't have an account anywhere.

It is a bad practice if the check is drawn on their bank though. Nobody wants to do business with a bank that won't cash their routine payroll checks even when the money is there for Pete's sake.

He has paid cash for everything he owns, including his home. He doesn’t believe in credit. He never has, even though our dad was a banker. He is very suspicious of banks and the government. He quotes Shakespeare, a borrower, nor a lender be.
