[h=2]As December nears its end and so with it the year 2015, the number of homicides in Baltimore has surged to its highest rate since the 1990s with 340 deaths as of Monday, December 29.[/h] While there were more murders in the past, Baltimore has reached a grim new milestone with its 340th murder making 2015 the worst year for murders on a per capita basis. And it should be noted that there is still three more days left to the year.

Authorities report that in 1993 there were 353 murders, making that year the most dangerous year on record. However, Baltimore had 100,000 more residents at that than today.

Murders in the city began to multiply after the riots over the death of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old African American who died from a broken neck in April of 2015 while in police custody.

In fact, only a few months after Gray’s death and the ensuing riots, in July of this year the city suffered its highest monthly murder rate in 43 years.

The rise in murders came after police were told by city officials to stand down during the riots and in the ensuing months where police became the object of intense criticism as “part of the problem” in the city.

After increased scrutiny, many began to charge that the police were holding back and refusing to do their jobs to stop the increasing violence in the city, a charge that officers strenuously denied.

Congrats Baltimore!!!

That murder figure is about the same as New York City's.

The only problem is that Baltimore has a population of about 600,000, whereas New York City's population is 8 million, plus an additional 2 million commuting workers and tourists every day.

It's a shame. Baltimore was finally a city making a comeback.

One really has to wonder if Obama revels in misery and ruin and if black lives truly matter to him.

They don't matter, that's the tragic irony. Black lives matter only when it fits the narrative.

But the numbers are astounding for a city that size. Pound for pound, Baltimore is every bit as dangerous as parts of Iraq or Syria.

[h=1]Deadliest year in Baltimore history ends with 344 homicides[/h]
Blood was shed in Baltimore at an unprecedented pace in 2015, with mostly young, black men shot to death in a near-daily crush of violence.

On a per-capita basis, the year was the deadliest ever in the city. The year's tally of 344 homicides was second only to the record 353 in 1993, when Baltimore had about 100,000 more residents.

The killings were on pace with recent years in the early months of 2015 but skyrocketed after the unrest and rioting of late April. In five of the next eight months, killings topped 30 or 40 a month.

Nearly 90 percent of the year's homicides were the result of shootings, renewing calls for new gun laws. Counting nonfatal shootings, gun violence was up more than 75 percent compared to last year, with more than 900 people shot.

More than 90 percent of the homicide victims this year were boys or men, more than 90 percent were black, and more than half were between the ages of 18 and 30 — reflecting an urban reality that residents and civil rights activists say is devoid of legitimate job opportunities and caught up in the often-violent drug trade.
