My understanding is that the subject of gifts to Presidents and First Ladies has come up before. The gifts belong to "We, the People", not the office holder. However, the gifts are often loaned to Presidential libraries. IIRC, it came up with Reagan and everyone after him.

trump is really the first POTUS with a direct conflict re. foreign emoluments. His DC hotel was a hotbed for foreign leaders purchasing favors from trump. Say nothing of his inaugural 'party' that raised over $100 million dollars, with quite a bit coming from other countries.

You want a ruler that you are comfortable obeying. A parental figure who will tell you what to do. A firm hand to decide on a case by case basis who is allowed to do what, someone you can curry favor with so that you can be given more.

Free people seek the rule of law. Immutable statutes that define the rules for everyone. With principles that apply to all. The letter of the law applied to everyone - regardless of party affiliation, color, or creed.
