Tea party favorite Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., has unveiled a plan for cutting $400 billion in federal spending that includes freezing Veterans Affairs Department health care spending and cutting veterans’ disability benefits.

Her proposed VA budget cuts would account for $4.5 billion of the savings included in the plan, posted on her official House of Representatives website.

Paul Sullivan, executive director of Veterans for Common Sense, said cutting veterans’ health care spending is an ill-advised move at a time when the number of veterans continues to grow as troops return from Iraq and Afghanistan. Sullivan said he finds it difficult to see how VA could freeze health care costs without hurting veterans.

“It is really astonishing to see this,” he said.

Disabled Veterans Decry Wrongheaded, ‘Heartless’ Budget Cuts

WASHINGTON -- If Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) wanted to make a name for herself by proposing to cut funding for veterans health care and disability compensation, she has succeeded. “Such an ill-advised proposal is nothing short of heartless,” according to Disabled American Veterans Washington Headquarters Executive Director David W. Gorman.

“It is unconscionable that while our nation is at war someone would even think of forcing our wounded warriors to sacrifice even more than they already have,” Gorman said. “Their injuries and disabilities were the result of their service to the nation, and our nation must not shirk its responsibilities toward them. How do you tell a veteran who has lost a limb that he or she has not sacrificed enough? Yet Rep. Bachmann wants to do just that.”

Now members of the war-mongering party want to cut veteran's benefits.

For those who complain about the Repubs not having any input into HCR do they expect anything of value regarding health care reform from Repubs when they are suggesting cutting care for veterans?

Can the Repub party possibly become any more disgusting?

Considering the budgets the dept of defense has, cutting veteran's benefits should be safe. Should be. But apparently the DoD contractors are still going to get their money, while the soldiers who served will get screwed again.

Last I checked the VA has it's own budget independent of the DoD.

Like any other government organization, the VA is bloated and budget cuts along with sound management policies would force it to be more efficient.

I just can't get over how much you fucking slime balls on the right get excited about punishing other people. It is the number one personality marker of authoritarianism...

And we KNOW...

While not all conservatives are authoritarians; all highly authoritarian personalities are political conservatives.

$4.5 Billion.............
Cap increases in Department of Veterans Affairs health care spending, and reduce disability compensation to
account for SS disability payments. Reduce Veterans’ Disability Compensation to account for Social Security
Disability Insurance payments.
==========================================================
For those with limited reading comprehension abilities, I'll clarify.....

#1 Capping increases in health care spending IS NOT CUTTING....it is limiting the increase....

#2 Reducing disability payments from the VA fund to compensate what is paid from the SS fund is, in effect, CAPPING the total disability compensation....

LOL, its liberals that are authoritarians. Bachmann wants to cut government, and make it less intrusive.

Amazing how you libtards champion the very things that you claim to hate. :)

That is fine. Implement the sound mgmt policies and save the money. But cutting the budget would have the immediate effect of lowering the care we provide for the veterans, and that is unacceptable.

Cutting veteran's benefits is not making the gov't less intrusive. It is reducing the care provided for those who stepped up to serve and where injured. The nation made them a promise. We need to keep that promise.

I am not saying veterans benefits can never be cut. I am just saying that they should be one of the absolute last places we cut.

Lets try it again....

Its the same shit the Dems tryed to pull in '04.....
Funding for Veterans up 27%, But Democrats Call It A Cut
February 18, 2004
Money for Veterans goes up faster under Bush than under Clinton, yet Kerry accuses Bush of an unpatriotic breach of faith.
The fact was, by 2007 the VA budget had increased about 50% under GWB....

Now they're trying to spin Bachmann's numbers .... its amazing how Conservative women sure scare the hell out of Democrats.....like her proposal had any chance of becoming law.
Shes a lowly Representative from Minnesota...shes not even a big wheel on any important sub-committees.....and she has the Dems. unloading in their pants over nothing....4.5 billion...the government spends that every few seconds.

Yes, I saw this the first time.

However, when you limit the increase on funds, but do not limit the increase in the number of disabled veterans (from 2 wars plus), and you do not have cost controls for their expenses in effect, you are cutting their benefits.

That would be true if thats what she was proposing....capping the increase means that each vet would get "less" but that "less" would still be an increase. Like they would be getting a 5 % increase as opposed to a 7% increase....

And the disability payments are just changing which pocket gives up the cash, the VA or SS....we have a version of that in our tax law now, don't we..earing limits, taxable SS, benefit reductions, etc....
Am I saying that right?
