I would agree.

Johnson's words seem relatively mild when compared to Strom's words AND deeds imho. I mean, to the best of my knowledge, LBJ never statutorily raped the colored daughter of the family maid, impregnating her, all the while preaching for racial purity.

ah...you're right. But then, the leader of YOUR party in the Senate - the senior elected republican in all the land - DID say that America would be a better place TODAY if we had elected that racist rapist back in 1948. There's that.

"That" was said in jest, of course, to an old man on his 100th birthday, was never Party policy, and was never enacted as such.

What Johnson said was to convey his reasoning of a strategic Party policy. It is exactly the reasoning that I explained to you earlier, just without the unnecessary slurs. Wouldn't you agree?

His speech laced with the popular codeword, "state's rights" drew thunderous applause from the crowd which was said to include Edgar Ray Killen, who undoubtedly clapped the loudest.

What Trent Lott said was to remind the faithful that the GOP was still the party of southern racists in the new millennium.
