BAC - "Slaves to religion"

It's hard to know sometimes when you're serious and when you're saying something tongue in cheek because you're so all over the board consistency wise that it's tough to know where you stand.

I made a comment yesterday about how erked I am at the huge proportion of blacks that voted to discriminate against the gay minority in California, as well as the other Christians who did so. The profoundly distrubing thing to me isn't the fact that Christian evangelicals voted in such high numbers against the rights of gay Americans, but that blacks (who one would expect be among the most sensitive to such things) did so as well.

I want your thoughts on this. There are a lot of people in this country I would categorize as being "slaves to religion" and African Americans certainly aren't alone in that category. What makes their vote on this so upsetting is precisely the willingness of the black community in California to wield the stick of oppression against a minority they dislike. It's really heart breaking.

What are your thoughts?
 
what meadowmuffins, as if blacks cannot disagree with homosexual marriage and if they do, how dare they, afterall their foreparents were slaves...

If I had my way, I'd deny everyone the "right" to vote away the rights of others.

I'm not putting restrictions on anyone's voting rights.

My guess is CA will overturn this law in the next election cycle without anyone touching anyone's voting rights.

What does being black have to do with it? Do you seriously not see the profound irony of the CA black community voting for a proposition that oppresses the rights of a minority group? Seriously, you are a retard. Everyone expects white racist/homophobic Christian evangelicals to do that, but when the black community does it breaks the heart.

it does not reek of any irony....to compare homosexual marriage to the bonds of slavery is the height of ignorance. while i believe they should be allowed to marry since the government has stepped into marriage, the absence of any rights are minimal compared to slavery. further, except for DOMA laws, all those rights can still be had vis a vis contracts....

you really have blown me away with your comparison to slavery. it is appalling and sick.
 
NO ONE IN THIS COUNTRY HAS EVER HAD THE "RIGHT" TO MARRY, MUCH LESS, MARRY THE SAME SEX! IT IS NOT DENYING ANYONE A RIGHT, BECAUSE IT HAS NEVER BEEN A RIGHT! HOMOSEXUALS MAINTAIN THE EXACT SAME OPPORTUNITY TO MARRY A PERSON OF THE OPPOSITE SEX AS ANYONE ELSE IN AMERICA, AND NO ONE ELSE IN AMERICA IS BEING GIVEN WHAT IS BEING DEMANDED WITH GAY MARRIAGE!

Nope... There is a fundamental right to have the opportunity to marry. Homosexuals share this same fundamental right with every American. There is no "right to marry" because marriage is between a consenting man and woman. I don't have the "right" to marry someone who doesn't want to marry me back.

I'm not comparing it to slavery, retard. I'm comparing the two groups of people struggling for civil rights.
 
Dixie's whole viewpoint on this issue is that allowing some gays to marry somehow infringes on his ability to practice his religion. Make sense? Nope. Neither does anything else he comes up with.
