The Charleston church shooting (also known as the Charleston church massacre[6][7][8]) was a mass shooting and hate crime that took place at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, United States, on the evening of June 17, 2015. During a prayer service, nine people (including the senior pastor, state senator Clementa C. Pinckney) were killed by gunman Dylann Roof, a 21-year-old white supremacist. Three other victims survived. The morning after the attack, police arrested Roof in Shelby, North Carolina. Roof confessed to committing the shooting in hopes of igniting a race war. The shooting targeted one of the United States' oldest black churches, which has long been a site for community organization around civil rights.
Roof was found competent to stand trial in federal court, and in December 2016 was convicted of 33 federal hate crime charges stemming from the shooting. He faced a potential death sentence in that case. Separately, Roof has been charged with nine counts of murder in the State of South Carolina state courts.
Roof espoused racial hatred in both a website manifesto published before the shooting, and a journal written from jail afterwards. Photographs posted on the website showed Roof posing with emblems associated with white supremacy and with photos of the Confederate battle flag. The shooting triggered debate on its modern display, and following the shooting, the South Carolina General Assembly voted to remove the flag from State Capitol grounds.
Roof was convicted of murder and hate crime charges in Federal court in December 2016. On January 10, 2017, Roof was sentenced to death.[9]

... many newcomers to The Town, perhaps drawn here by housing that is much cheaper than it is in San Francisco (although it's very expensive here and getting worse), seem to be unaware of Oakland's secret sauce, or they desperately want to change Oakland so that it's more like Anywhere, USA.

We've seen this culture clash erupt recently several times. And, unfortunately, it's had racist overtones.

Given the price of housing in the Bay area, why wouldn't you believe that racist conservatives wouldn't move to Oakland?

The numbers speak pretty clearly to the political leanings of the City. In fact Jill Stein may have received more votes than Trump in Oakland. I think it's more than just a "chance" that people moving to Oakland are politically liberal.

I think most, but certainly not all moving to Oakland might be liberal .. but it's FAR more likely than a 'chance' that racists are conservative and republican FAR more than being liberals.

THOSE numbers speak for themselves.

Those people most certainly are racist .. but they aren't liberal.

You're perpetuating a right-wing myth .. that liberals don't really like Black people.

Everything in my experience says otherwise. It isn't liberals we have to worry about .. it's republicans and conservatives.

The article is claiming the calling of the police by the residents was racist. Is that hyperbole? Maybe we are talking past each other.
