One Russian city wants to send a message to Americans protesting the election of Donald Trump: Well, we like him.

The city of Obninsk was granted a permit for a rally Saturday in favor of the U.S. president-elect — another sign of Trump’s embrace in a country
whose relations with the Obama administration soured badly over rifts such as Syria and Ukraine.

The demonstration was organized by Artyom Mainas, a 27-year-old blogger in Obninsk...“I thought, well, it would be good if we can organize something here in Russia
to demonstrate our support to the newly-elected president,” Mainas said by telephone Friday. “We think that Trump is a good candidate for Russia.”

On Friday, Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s foreign minister, said Trump and Putin see “eye-to-eye politically,” according to the TASS news agency.

Putin also sounded a bellicose note Friday, saying Russia is working to develop new weapons to “ensure a strategic balance.”

“We think that Trump is a good candidate for Russia.”
which doesn't mean Trump isn't a good candidate for the USA..quit thinking 'zero sum' ( winners and losers about everything)

it's a multi-polar world, and always has been

I'm not thinking "winners-losers". I'm thinking trump is crazy to trust Putin, who has a record of screwing people over. I think trump should proceed carefully and not make such a big deal about how he can thaw relations with Russia. trump's an ignorant neophyte who doesn't seem to have a clue about the authoritarian strongman who kills or imprisons journalists and political opponents who don't agree with him.
trump can discuss dealing with Russia but he doesn't have to gush over Putin like he does.

his "gushing" was campaign contrasting to Obama -who is so...feckless/incapable/unwilling to lead.
"strong leader"is Trump's crappy way of saying Putin get's his way internationally.

I don't see gushing -I see an understanding that one either put's oneself out there and shapes events, or one reacts to events.
Whatever you think about Trump -he is capable of being an executive.

Of course Putin is also shining him on. But the outcome we need is getting past the zero sum evaluations;
and I think Trump gets that -a YUGE part of our foreign policy apparatus does not.
Clinton did not. Cold War 2.0 must stop.

IMO none of this changes the fact that Putin cannot be trusted. trump is not going to "look into his eyes and see his soul", as bush thought he could. Putin has no soul.

and again..detente is not about trust. Reagan sort of said it "trust but verify" - make sure we understand each other
and find ways to live on the same planet without jingoist bellicosity as the driving factor.

I do not care about Putin's soul either. I care about not feeding the MIC all our resources.
