bullshit. for kids, it should be mandated, not for adults. besides, dumbass, we have airbags now. and even if not, so what? i guess you would want the government to ban motorcycles because a loved one might die. screw that shit. seat belt mandates, helmet mandates, are bullshit. because they do not affect others enough to justify government intervention.
Nothing in any State constitution gives the authority to the government to mandate seat belts. This is true not just in cars, but in aircraft.
That said, seat belts are a very cheap device that saves lives. They actually work, and quite well.
Airbags don't always go off. An accident severe enough to cause injury may not set off the airbag at all.
Airbags are also a hazard to some passengers (that are not tall enough, such as children and midgets), and can KILL in those instances.
Airbags are also a hazard to automotive technicians. These are explosive devices that must be disabled before working on the car.
Helmets can be useful, especially on motorcycles. It should be up to the rider to determine if he wants to wear a helmet.
Lefty's question, while rhetorical, is not BS. Obviously, no one wants a body flying into a windshield. Seat belts may or may not prevent this. depending on the damage to the cabin of the car. Not even an airbag can prevent this in all cases.
These laws are the result of insurance agencies, trying to reduce their cost of expensive accidents.
Another factor that is not being considered here, and should be, is the improved roadways. Signposts and lampposts break away now, instead of smashing the car. Buried leading ends of guardrails means they won't wind up skewering people in the car. Jersey barriers that throw the car back away from an opposing lane or dangerous barrier means hitting one will reduce the chance of serious injury in an accident. Frog barriers such as barrels of water or sand are very effective for cars that hit the frog of an off ramp. The cars themselves are also built better to protect the cabin, sacrificing the engine compartment to absorb the energy of a crash. Crush areas on cars reduce the effect of impact.
As anyone that watches the numerous dash cam videos of stupid drivers, there are plenty of them out there, and they do cause some spectacular accidents from time to time, but people often walk away from those accidents now.
