1:16PM EDT October 14. 2012 - Former U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, who represented Pennsylvania for 30 years as a moderate Republican-turned-Democrat, has died, the Associated Press reports.

Specter, 82, had health issues for years, undergoing two brain surgeries, two rounds of chemotherapy and heart surgery before re-entering the hospital in August for what was described as "a serious form of cancer."

Specter had been teaching at the University of Pennsylvania law school after his re-election defeat in the 2010 Democratic primary to Rep. Joe Sestak, shortly after abandoning the Republican party because of what he called "irreconcilable differences."

A pro-choice Republican, Specter had been critical of GOP efforts to impeach President Bill Clinton and the secret wiretapping of American citizens under President George W. Bush.

Upon his departure from the Senate, Specter lamented the dwindling number of centrists. "Moderates and some conservatives have fallen like flies at the hands of the extremists in both parties," he said.

I liked Arlen... Rush hated him for being "moderate" but honestly, who else was on Bush about warrantless wiretapping other than Ds? Our rights aren't a partisan issue.

Moderates aren't ideologs and believe in good governance for 'the people' 'by the people' as elected officials. They're willing to work with people rather than stand toe to toe with unelected people like Norquist.

moderates aren't ideologues because they are cowards and uninformed.

Ideologues are brainwashed slaves to dogma. Their rigidity has nothing to do with courage or being informed.

treating moderation as some higher form of truth, where reality lies somewhere in the middle, is a fallacy. Somethings are more right than others.

Would you compromise and take a moderate position on womens rights?

moderates are cowards afraid to stake themselves out on any position.
No. Moderates are people who are self confident in their talents and abilities and who are not so frustrated by their short comings in life that they feel compelled to become fanatics or extremist.

I have more respect for people I 100% disagree with and who try to undo everything I hold dear than I hold for a cowardly fence sitting no-opinion do nothing.

maybe we are both right mott. Truth probably lies somewhere in the middle.

That presupposes the erroneous point of view that supporting womens rights isn't a moderate position. Please explain to me Grind, what is extreme about a person having a right to self determination, including women?

Truth can lie in many places. Seeking truth is not what makes you a moderate. Being objective and seeking practical solutions to problems and working together with people in a spirit of compromise to solve those problems is what makes one a moderate.
