No, I cannot. Which is why I don't believe that the secession was illegal. That being said, even if we hold to the prevailing opinion, they still were not fighting under the US flag, and, as a rebellion, they would still not be viewed as US veterans, unless they had previously been in service (because no one was ever prosecuted for their crimes).

Wrong! They did fight under the US flag .. the old flag of the federal republic and not your flag of centralized authority and empire!
They weren't prosecuted because the fed had no case against them that could hold up in a US court of law. The fed needed a kangaroo court to convict them so they were held as political prisoners until hostilities ceased resulting in the deaths of over a million people and millions of dollars in private property damage.
