Apparently saying vagina in MI can get you banned

Lisa Brown: Silenced for saying (shock!) 'vagina'

(CNN) -- One week ago, the Michigan House of Representatives was taking up some of the most restrictive anti-choice legislation in the country. It was in the context of this bill that I said, "Finally Mr. Speaker, I'm flattered that you're all so interested in my vagina, but 'no' means 'no.'"
You can watch me say that here. My comment is made around the 1:50 mark, and you can see exactly how the legislators seated behind me reacted. While there was a scatter of applause from my colleagues, there were no dropped jaws, bulging eyes or fainting. In fact, the only remarkable thing about their response is that there was virtually no response at all.

Not until the next day. That's when I got word that Republican House leaders had banned me and my colleague Rep. Barb Byrum from speaking on the House floor. I was shocked.

Given my speech, I could only assume it was because I spoke to my Jewish values or because I had said vagina. But later that day, Rep. Mike Callton told the press that what I had said was so vile, so disgusting, that he could never bear to mention it in front of women or "mixed company."

what word would be acceptable then? unmentionable? down there? private spot?

this claim was stupid in the first thread we had about it.....did you think it would be any less stupid if you repeated it?.....

I don't know about any inference to rape but here is what was said according to http://www.theliberalcurmudgeon.com/2012/06/michigan-rep-lisa-brown-silenced-for.html

Also banned from talking on Thursday is Rep. Lisa Brown (D), who explained that, as a Jewish woman, she abides by Judaism's tenet that abortions performed to save the life of the mother are mandatory. Brown concluded, "I have not asked you to adopt and adhere to my religious beliefs. Why are you asking me to adopt yours? Finally, Mr. Speaker, I'm flattered that you're all so interested in my vagina, but no means no."

This is a sophomoorish way of putting things and has no place in the discourse of serious lawmakers, IMO. I am sure it is for this reason she got banned and not for the use of the word vagina. I mean, to me it's right up there with, "If you'd get your lips off my penis I could understand what you're saying." Both uses are vulgar, IMO.

I am sorry leaningright, but, it is not the same. In what instance would the use of that phrase refer to laws Enacted by Congress, whereas, there have been numerous laws which invade a womans privacy and involve vaginas.

lol, one of the women had just introduced an amendment to the bill limiting access to vasectomies (voted down) so the phrase would have been completely appropriate.....

In that context it is. You're being intellectually dishonest, Rana. Why do you have to be so crass?
How utterly pathetic. Why do you have such an unhealthy hangup about the mention of, what to me, is the most beautiful feature of human anatomy. How could that be considered vulgar in any context? I really do feel sorry for you. You are missing out on so much wonder and beauty.

she wasn't banned for using the word vagina, she was banned for telling the Speaker of the House that he was interested in her vagina and inferring that he was trying to rape her.....

you expect me to know that a whiny thread about the alleged war on women is the same as this? :pke:

i've pretty much given up on those threads an ignore 90-% of them because they are bullshit.

btw....do cite her exact words. if she said those exact words, i will recant.

So they're just supposed to sit meekly by while their rights are being violated as severly by a group of insecure and self hating mysogenist as they would by a rapist? No sir. I cannot agree with you. There was nothing inappropriate about there comments what so ever.

I just realized that you'll say anything to avoid truth. How perfectly liberal of you to do that. ;)
Well what the hell. She's in good company then. Washington, Adams, Madison, Monroe, Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt. Yes sir, she's in very good company indeed.
