A high school teacher who told students to pretend to be Nazis writing a letter arguing why ‘Jews are evil’ has been placed on leave.
The ‘veteran’ English teacher at Albany High School, in New York state, was apparently instructing pupils to hone the art of persuasive writing with a letter to a fictitious Nazi government official.
Some of the children in the three sophomore English classes refused to write the essay.
District superintendent Marguerite Wyngaard held a news conference to apologise for the assignment, describing it as ‘completely unacceptable’, but saying she did not believe it was malicious.
The district has not named the teacher.
The Times Union newspaper said the teacher was not in class on Friday and had been placed on leave by the school district, which is looking to take some form of disciplinary action and bring in sensitivity trainers from the Anti-Defamation League to work with teachers and pupils.
The writing assignment was done before a planned class reading of the memoir Night, by Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel.
For the assignment, the teacher asked pupils to research Nazi propaganda then write a letter trying to convince an official of the Third Reich ‘that Jews are evil and the source of our problems’.
