The combined U.S. goods and services trade deficit increased to $679 billion in 2020, compared to $481 billion in 2016, the year before Trump took office. The trade deficit in goods alone hit $916 billion, a record high and an increase of about 21 percent from 2016.
Trump failed in one of his major trade policy goals because the U.S. trade deficit is driven more by macroeconomic factors, like how much a country spends and saves, than it is by tariffs and foreign trade practices, analysts said.
“The Trump administration never had a feasible plan for reducing the trade deficit,” explained Mary Lovely, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. “Their 2017 tax cut ensured that the U.S. as a whole would continue to spend more than it produced, hence the need for a current account deficit. The tariffs on China reduced imports from China, but these were mostly replaced with imports from other sources.”

I suspect it is a move to push more voters towards the Left. The Left has long advocated--See Naomi Klein's work for example--that turning owners into renters (dispossessing them) will make them more inclined to vote for Progressive / Socialist ideas. Owners tend to be more Conservative. So, by forcing more people into renting, the Left thinks they'll be helped politically.

I heard though the grapevine by the way, TurtleDude JUST got banned from DP like 2 weeks ago.
He was like their top poster.. something like a half-million posts since he joined.
The forum problem is, if you really say what you believe and hold people responsible , you will not be there very long. For me there is really no alternative, I say what I believe and I say it the way I want to. That will get you dumped any day. If they don't want you there , the rules are made so that they can get rid of you anytime they really want to. Not really complaining its their game they can make the rules, but people have to realize they are written to control, not to tame the beast.
I made it 6 years. I think what drove me out what the feedback I got from the MAGA crowd there after twump lost and attacked us. Like here, they remake reality in their image. Well, I didn't like that, and started flaming the fuck out of the Nazi's .. well.. that was against the rules, and I was suspended about 3 times in the period of a month before I flamed out and suicided by mod.
Here is a lot better for me - the con about here: Fewer rules so more trolls. The pro: We're unfiltered.
This is my preference. Even if they invited me back, I'd be banned and right back here in 10 min.
