Texas 5-year-old shoots 7-year-old brother during boys’ bath time

A 7-year-old boy in Texas is expected to recover after being shot by his 5-year-old brother while the two were taking a bath together on Tuesday.

Officials with the Houston Police Department said that both boys were in the bathtub when the mother stepped away for a brief time. Investigators believed that the younger boy got out of the bathtub and found a rusty bolt-action .22 caliber rifle and shot his older brother.

Sgt. Ryan Gardiner described the injuries as “non-life threatening.”

“It was one bullet hole that went through his lower back,” Gardiner said.

Police were talking with the parents, but no charges had been filed as of Wednesday morning.

What legislation was there a lack of compromise on that you feel would have prevented this incident?

ROFL No self respecting gun nut would have a rusty gun laying around.

"Investigators believed that the younger boy got out of the bathtub and found a rusty bolt-action .22 caliber rifle and shot his older brother."

From another source.....http://www.ksdk.com/news/article/379548/28/5-year-old-shoots-brother-7-following-bath-time-

"We need to take care of kids getting guns in the house," said Elizabeth Valencia. "It's too dangerous."
"They're good parents," said Rosa Laredo.

I am going to guess the parents are of the Latin persuasion. If we are lucky maybe they will get deported.

I'm with CA, what legislation did anyone refuse to compromise on that would have prevented this?

This trend of posting any gun related tragedy and then claiming that the recent defeat of additional gun controls is responsible is laughable.

At least Topper is honest. He wants to model our gun laws on places that all but banned private ownership.

That kid definitely should have had a background check before his bath time...
On a serious note, this is a problem that I believe CAN be addressed through the law. In cases like this, we tend to take pity on the parents. We will say things like "aww, leave them alone, their kid just got shot. Haven't they suffered enough?" There are laws on the books addressing the negligent handling and storage of firearms. People that own firearms need to be made aware of the existence of these laws, they need to be heavily emphasized, and the penalties for violations of these laws need to be beefed up considerably. I would imagine that even the sale of firearms would go down a lot. If people knew that if they were charged with negligent or hazardous use or storage of a firearm, that they would be extremely heavily fined, all of their guns would be confiscated, a mandatory five-year prison sentence, and like any other convicted felon a loss of your rights to own a firearm, vote and all the other stuff that goes along with committing a serious crime. But most of all, the laws on the books now must be enforced.

A half a century ago, my mother used to competitively target shoot with a 22 rifle. She owned two of them, and they were meticulously cared for and stored on a closet shelf out of my reach. I finally figured out I could get to them if I stood up on a chair. And she came in one day and found me sitting on the floor playing with one of those rifles. She calmly took it away from me, and she commenced to tell me the different parts of the rifle and how it worked. She asked me not to take it down from the shelf anymore unless she or my dad was there. One of the parts that she didn't explain to me was the firing pin, which she had removed from both rifles and stored at the gun range, along with the ammunition. She didn't need a law for that, it was common sense. At the same time, we have to make sure that we understand the difference between negligence and pure accidents or mechanical failures.

And that has what to do with your inability to form a complete sentence?

I know plenty of people with only a high school education that are rich. What we were discussing was education.
Slamming idiots on a message board without proper grammar being the standard for you is fine with me.
I went to college to get wealthy
