Another Broken Obama Promise: Writing legislation behind closed doors

Obama promised this:
"End the Practice of Writing Legislation Behind Closed Doors: As president, Barack Obama will restore the American people's trust in their government by making government more open and transparent. Obama will work to reform congressional rules to require all legislative sessions, including committee mark-ups and conference committees, to be conducted in public. By making these practices public, the American people will be able to hold their leaders accountable for wasteful spending and lawmakers won't be able to slip favors for lobbyists into bills at the last minute. "

And what is going on now is, on the supposed most important bill of the stimulus, the Democrats are doing exactly that; completely shutting out anyone who is not a Democrat to avoid further public scrutiny on this embarassingly wasteful spending spree:

"Republicans have caught the Democrats in a midnight “stimulus” power play that seeks to cut Republican conferees out of the House-Senate negotiations to resolve a final version of the Obama “stimulus” package. Staff members from the offices of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) met last night to put together the “stimulus” conference report.

They intend to attempt to shove this $1.3 trillion spending bill through in the dead of the night without Republican input so floor action can take place in both chambers on Thursday."

Give him time. He'll fix that problem... eventually... like about three days before he leaves office. He wouldn't want any nosy citizens actually knowing what he is doing it while he is doing it. That could hamper his progress.

"Reportedly"? And who are they? Sorry but the Repubs are up in arms because they, nor the public were allowed to view what was going on.

"The Washington Post has reported that negotiations between House and Senate Democrats have resulted in a stimulus bill with a price tag of “about $789.5 billion.” This agreement raised the ire of Rep. Tom Price, R-Ga., and he went outside of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office to express it.

“My name’s Tom Price and I represent the Sixth District of Georgia and [am] the privileged chair of the Republican Study Committee,” Price said. “It’s now noon on Wednesday. I’m standing outside the office of the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi. The door is closed. We just heard news break there’s been an agreement between the House and the Senate on the non-stimulus bill."


Negotiators were slated to meet later in the day. However, since news of a deal was leaked to the media, Price questioned if there were “shady deals” going on."

The fact that this legislation passed with minimal debate is sad.

Almost $800 billion of our tax dollars spent (5% in infrastructure and $400 million into studying global warming), and all without being open with the public or debating the details?

This doesn't seem like change to me.





The driver of the bus changed, and they redecorated the seats, but its the same destination we have had for decades.

No, I am not joking.

This partisan bullshit is killing us. And the differences between the parties are getting more and more trivial.

They argue about gay marriage and talk radio. But BOTH parties pass legislation full of pork and earmarks. Both parties ignore the desperate need for tax reform. Both parties caused this economic nightmare. Both parties ignored the problems at Freddie & Fannie Mae. Both parties are lying to us at ever turn.


Neither party is really interested in helping anything. Their job is to get reelected.

And as long as they have the population picking sides and arguing amoungst ourselves they will continue to do what they are doing.

The Dems are happy because "their" team won. But nothing is really different.

When the repubs won, they were happy because it was their team.

Both were supporting their team, regardless of whether they did any good or not.

The only bill like it was the one back in October, under Bush, and it was the Dems. then that were most eager for it. If you recall, most Republicans did not wish to sign it, but it was sold in the media, as this one has been, with the theatrics and dire warnings of Armageddon.

This bill was rushed through and I predict it will be an albatross for generations.

Just like the war was pushed, and the Patriot Act, and plenty of Bush legislation.



Both parties run the same game. They just make claims that the other party is responsible for the problems and that they have the solution.

The reason they stand for nothing is because our parties are not partisan ENOUGH. If we'd get shit done without listening to the Republicans, change would happen. But no. Harry Reid has to basically give the Republicans control of the senate.
