An Irishman's view regarding the removal of statues

Lincoln stated that the war was not about slavery but taxes, don't you believe him?

Well, he didn't start the war, so I'll defer to the opinions of the men who did - all of whom collectively believed it was about slavery (and more specifically, a society ordered by race). Lincoln probably believed that tax policy had driven the south to secede. To this day, few people seem to have appreciated just how truly fanatical the south was about its belief in a racially pure society. Slavery, beyond being an economic enterprise, was viewed as simply a tool to achieve these ends. Northerners at the time, and most people alive today, really seem to miss the point, because Lincoln assumed he was dealing with rational beings to the very end.

You seem not to have read the secession documents, which state why the southern states were seceding.

The South was seceding because slaves were the main building and harvesting tool of the time. This was 99 percent of the reason for breaking with the North, it does not matter when these assholes wrote......................
