Amanda Gorman's Inauguration Poem Banned — Along with 3 books— at a Miami-Area School

"The Hill We Climb," a now-famous poem written and recited by Gorman at Biden's 2020 inauguration, is among four works that were singled out by a parent who complained that they sent "indirect hate messages"

A Florida school has banned four books for elementary students after one parent objected to the titles and argued they were inappropriate. One of them was a collection of poems by Amanda Gorman that includes her noteworthy The Hill We Climb piece, which she recited during the last presidential inauguration.

The Miami Herald, citing records obtained by the Florida Freedom to Read Project, reports that a parent at Bob Graham Education Center in Miami Lakes objected to five titles at the K-8 school. The books included The ABCs of Black History, Cuban Kids, Countries in the News: Cuba, Love to Langston, and the poem The Hill We Climb, which was read aloud by Gorman at the inauguration of President Joe Biden in 2020 and is included in a larger book of poems released by Gorman.

Well, let me give you a CLARIFICATION of at least one of your charges (please read the entire link and not stop at any MAGA trigger words).

Langston Hughes Was a Lifelong Socialist

Given that Hughes traveled extensively within the Eastern Bloc and the USSR, to include collaborations on various artistic things with persons there, it is pretty obvious that he was also a Communist sympathizer.

Fuck that's weird. 'cuz communist' all bad. A lot of language but no substance and honesty dpressing.

Communism is bad. Name a country that has gotten a communist government an been improved, substantially, for it.

My man, move on.
Communism is dead.
U.S. won the cold war.
Fund another enemy one closer to yourself.
Shits over.

We got socialisms/communism for the Rich by buying democracy.
and
Everything else is tribal stupidity and distraction.

"age-appropriate", aka "restricted", which translated to a book banned to those kids.

But I'll throw you a bone: tell us all what parts of the book are not "age appropriate". I'll wait.

I'm not reading that stuff. I have no interest in it. If you think you're qualified, you should get on the board that makes these decisions. Just make sure that you're advocating for parents, and not jousting at your own windmills. And your assertion that "age-appropriate", aka "restricted", which translated to a book banned to those kids" Is illogical. Exchange the word "book" for "vodka and cigarettes" and maybe you're on to something.

yes or no

In Brandenburg v. Ohio (1969), the Supreme Court of the United States held the First Amendment does not protect speech that is “directed to inciting or producing imminent lawless action and is likely to incite or produce such action.” Mere advocacy of lawbreaking or violence remains protected speech as long as it is not intended to and likely to provoke immediate unlawful action.

So if your "handbook" complies with that ruling, then it'll be on the shelves. If not, then it won't be. Capice?

And it's pretty obvious that you did NOT read the entire content....you just spew more of your MAGA troll myopia. For your education:

... Hughes viewed socialism from an internationalist perspective, and he ventured all over the world in search of revolutionary meaning. In the mid-’20s, he visited West Africa while working on a freighter, an experience that disillusioned him about maritime industry. On a trip to Cuba and Haiti in 1930, he connected with literary editor José Antonio Fernández de Castro and Marxist intellectual Jacques Roumain — whose 1944 novel Masters of Dew was translated to English by Hughes. In China he met Lu Hsun, a favorite poet of Mao Zedong, and in France spent time with Négritude writers Aimé Césaire and Léopold Sédar Senghor.

... While Hughes was drawn to Soviet communism, he still believed in black liberation worldwide. His 1938 poem “A New Song,” published by the International Workers Order, envisions a revolution led by the African diaspora (“I speak in the name of the black millions / Awakening to action / Let all others keep silent a moment”). Concurrently, in a May Day poem, he urges the international proletariat to “Be like the flowers” and bloom with “unknown power.” Racial justice and class consciousness were not mutually exclusive to Hughes, a principle he would maintain as Europe fell to fascism.

To make a long story short, Hughes was an admirer of the social revolution against despots and dictators as well as oppressive oligarchy ... all who did well with their versions of capitalism. Read this, as it explains his earlier admiration for the Russian Revolution, but eventually by the 1940's saw the evils of the Stalinist/communist Russia https://www.leftvoice.org/langston-hughes-reflects-on-the-promise-of-the-soviet-union/

Hope this helps.

No one "shut her up"; the book containing her poem (and others) was moved to the middle school/high school library.

WOW...some "ban".

The hysterical left piss themselves daily over madeup bullshit; this thread is another example.

Your first sentence is sheer pride in willful ignorance. If my local libraries started banning and "restricting" books, as a taxpayer I jolly well would want to know details even if I were not a parent. Living in a theocratic state can produce a generation that is repressive ... example being Afghanistan under the Taliban.

As for definitions:

Restriction - a limitation on the use or enjoyment of property or a facility

Ban (ning) - to prohibit the use, performance, or distribution of

Are the books being restricted to another level? Yes? Are kids of a certain age now must be prohibited from reading these books? Yes.

Get it now? I hope so.

So, my depiction of Hughes as a Socialist / Communist was spot on...

I don't give a fuck about social marxists, in fact I think they should be executed. Sue me.

Doubling down on MAGA mook stupidity just cements my point. Next time you try to say you're NOT a MAGA mook, I'll refer to this exchange.

MAGA has nothing to do with it. I think traitors should hang...by the neck until dead.

And junior...I'm much further to the Left than you and your gaggle of wannabe pretenders are.

If you say so. I feel no pride or shame about it, I'm simply not interested in that subject.

This might be why I don't care very much. I don't have kids. And if you don't have kids, you might just want to STFU about the whole thing. And take it from a backsliding but convicted Christian, America is about as far away from being a "theocratic state" as we can get.

As for definitions:

Okay.

Ban (ning) - to prohibit the use, performance, or distribution of

Well, your vocabulary seems intact, but still, nothing is being banned.

Are the books being restricted to another level? Yes? Are kids of a certain age now must be prohibited from reading these books? NO.

Once again, no books are being banned or even restricted (definitely not banned, and even if you want to call something restricted, hell, lots of things are restricted, to both adults and children There's parking restrictions, most military bases have restricted access, have you ever seen an "R" rated movie? The R literally means restricted). PARENTS have spoken on the matter. And there's not a damn thing stopping those parents from checking these books out and reading them with their kids or letting them read them on their own. Hell, they can even buy them on amazon and own them without fear of the "theocracy". Find another windmill to joust at.

Guillermo, you're full of it....just another MAGA mook troll with delusions of intelligence. You just stated on another thread that you were MAGA and Tea Party long before they officially existed. Now you say otherwise.

GMAFB.

Once I've reduced dimwits like you to this level, I just ignore you, as you are a waste of time and effort. Adios.
