Legion Troll

The alt-right, which is really just a bunch of white supremacists, thinks any moderation looks like censorship.

Their anger at being supposedly sidelined and silenced has spawned hashtag campaigns, think pieces, and now, a social media platform, Gab. Its primary schtick is promising an end to censorship. But by sequestering itself, Gab has managed to sideline members into an echo chamber so far removed from the rest of the conversation that its message has no chance of reaching unfamiliar ears.

Gab is barely a month old, so it may well flame out like Peach or Ello. But for now, the platform looks like an artifact from a dystopian universe where the alt-right completely took over Twitter.

Gab has over 42,000 people on its waitlist, more than 11,000 active members, and among them are nearly all the alt-right’s online kingpins, including Breitbart writer Milo Yiannopoulos, who was recently banned for life from Twitter.

Gab’s appeal for that crowd is obvious.

The only posting guidelines are no underage sexual content and no doxing.

Sound familiar? The alt-right copied JPP.

Gab is less a censorship-free utopia than an alt-right safe space—which is ironic, considering how much the alt-right loathes the very idea of safe space.

“We promote raw, rational, open, and authentic discourse online,” says Gab CEO Andrew Torba. "People say we’re an alt-right echo chamber,” says Torba. “But if there are any centrists, progressives, libertarians, or apolitical people interested in trying something new, I say, please join us.” Thing is, so far, few seem to have answered that call. In the #GabFam, as Gab users call themselves, #Trump seems to always chart. The word “deplorable” is getting a lot of play after Hillary Clinton used it last week, and Gab’s logo is a distinctly Pepe-ish looking frog.

Another irony of Gab is that despite being anti censorship, users have the option to deploy what are called “self censorship settings.” (The idea possibly being that Gab won’t censor you, but you can censor yourself if you really must!) You can mute people and posts that contain keywords of your choosing, without triggering a notification that lets the poster know you blocked them.

The alt-right community began circulating an unlikely online manifesto that credits liberals and the LGBT community itself for the attack.

The manifesto consists of two Tumblr posts that went up Sunday, hours after an explosive device rocked 23rd St. and a second suspected device, which didn’t detonate, was found on 27th St.

“I’m the NY Bomber,” the blog post claims, with the nameless writer claiming the bomb had been planted in protest of Deplorable Donald and mistreatment of the LGBT community.

New York officials have not announced a motive or suspect in the explosion. That hasn’t stopped some from circulating and crediting the page.

The blog, whose author claimed to be a member of the LGBT community and threatened to plant more explosives, was scrubbed from Tumblr shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday.

“I am not going to stand by while there is inequality in my country such as the racism being seen in white police officers all over the country,” the blogger wrote. “I am not going to live in a country where it is OK to have a misogynist, xenophobic, racist Islamophobic, republican candidate running for President of The United States!”

Some of the Tumblr’s earliest traffic came from 4Chan, where users began linking to it early Sunday morning.

Alt-right forums have a history of inventing narratives and suspects for mass shootings, sometimes pinning attacks on comedians or fellow 4Channers with Muslim-sounding names, although no users appear to have taken credit for this latest manifesto. “This has got to be fake,” one user wrote. “Too good to be true.”

Shortly after it appeared on 4Chan, Paul Joseph Watson, an editor at the deplorable Trump-supporting, conspiracy theory-peddling website InfoWars, was among the first to link to it on Twitter. “Tumblr blog ‘I'm the NY Bomber,’” Watson wrote. “Writer is an SJW who hates Trump.”

Watson became aware of the Tumblr after someone sent him a link in a Twitter direct message. Watson included the manifesto in his video “The Truth About the New York Bombing,” subtitled “The establishment is already in full cover-up mode,” which racked up over 70,000 views in five hours.

“Could this be another example of a crazed leftist going jihad in the same manner as the Black Lives Matter-inspired shooter who murdered cops in Dallas?” Watson asked.

In a similar “just asking” mode, Deplorable Donald himself declared 45 minutes after the explosion and before the device had been found that “a bomb went off in New York and nobody knows exactly what's going on but, boy we are really in a time, we better get tough folks."

Police officials were more skeptical. "I can't discount it altogether but I would be very surprised if it was the guy,” a knowledgeable law enforcement official actively involved in the investigation said.

Remember the deplorable's fake poutrage about ISIS throwing gays off buildings? I suspected they were just jealous because our laws prevent them from doing the same thing, and it looks like I was 100% correct.
