Two loud explosions were heard in Odessa on the Black Sea early today and black smoke was seen rising above the city, Ukraine’s largest port and headquarters of its navy.

“Odessa was attacked from the air. Some missiles were shot down by air defence,” the city council said in a brief statement on the Telegram messaging app.

An AFP reporter heard explosions in the southwestern city at around 6am (4am Irish time).

The blasts sent up at least three columns of black smoke with flames visible apparently in an industrial area.

A soldier near the site of one of the strikes said it was likely a rocket or a missile.

With Mariupol, to the east of Odessa, squarely in Russia’s crosshairs, Ukraine insists it has gained a leg up elsewhere in the country, leading to troops retaking territory north of the capital, Kyiv, as Russian forces departed.

“Ukraine has gained invaluable time, time that is allowing us to foil the enemy’s tactics and weaken its capabilities,” Zelenskyy said late yesterday.

However, inside Mariupol, which has been surrounded by Russian forces for more than a month and suffered by some of the war’s worst attacks, conditions remain dire and prospects for escape uncertain.

About 100,000 people are believed to remain in the Sea of Azov city, less than a quarter of its pre-war population of 430,000, and dire shortages of water, food, fuel and medicine persist.

Well I mean "Russian-speakers". Get it? They all speak Russian there. ;)

They're 'Slavic Brothers'. Like Canadians and Americans. They are closely related. 'Somebody' wants to be affiliated with Russia in the Donbas area, who else?

Yeah. Would be interesting to know what they think.

No. I wonder what the sentiment is. Western Ukraine certainly wants to be a part of Europe. Eastern Ukraine?

Putin could have put it up for vote but being an authoritairan asshole he chose to do it by force instead.

here are more than 20 Slavic languages. Traditionally they are divided into three subgroups:

East Slavic (Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian),
West Slavic (like Polish, Czech or Slovak),
South Slavic (like Slovene, Croatian, Macedonian or Bulgarian).

However, modern linguists admit that this division is more geographical (and political) than factual.

Also, because Ukrainian, Russian and Belarusian use the Cyrillic alphabet, they tend to be perceived as one group (although, Bulgarian, Macedonian and Serbian also use the Cyrillic alphabet).

However, in fact, in some aspects, Ukrainian is more similar to Slovak or Polish (from the West group) than to Russian language.

Anyway, there are many similarities between Ukrainian and Russian languages, as the two nations were connected politically and geographically for centuries.

its the cultural and economic ties of Donbas to Russia is what fuels Russian separatists
That and wanting an autonomy -after the Euromaidan forced their guy out

Thank you. That brave grandmother spoke to a Russian soldier, telling him to put the sunflower seeds in his pockets, so apparently they understood each other.

Agree. Maybe Putin will bomb the shit out of them and change their minds. Like Trump said "Putin is a Genius". :)

I read that the Russian speakers are not on Putin's side. They are Ukrainians who speak Russian. However, that does not refer to all of them. I am sure there are a few who want Putin to take over, but they may be a small section of the population. Putin created a real mess. When he starts bombing and destroying more cities, he will mobilize the anti-Putin types and create more of them.
