Every time gas prices go up, COngress investigatres the oil companies. They've done it literally dozens of times, looking for corruption, price-fixing, and God knows what else.

And every time, they've found.... nothing. No corruption, no gouging. Just normal market forces at work. Of course, they then threaten to slap high taxes on the oil companies' profits, regardless. Oddly, Congress has never investigated the oil companies when prices go down, nor offered to send them money when they don't make a profit... which has happened at times.

What might be the real reason oil prices keep going up? Demand is always going up as the population increases, of course.....

BTW, another reason they don't mention here, is that the Fed govt and many states put high taxes on every gallon of gas sold. A Fed excise tax of $.18 per gallon, a state excise tax of up to $.20/gallon, plus state and local sales taxes that can be as high as 9% on top of the purchase price.

Total taxes can be as high as $.70/gallon on gasoline, depending on which state and city you live in.

Do you begin to understand why gas prices are so high?

Awww poor little oil companies.

I feel so bad for them......... Ok ...I dont.
Yeah they should just be giving away the oil instead of profiting in the same manner as all other businesses in the US. Those evil greedy free marketers.

'cept when you gouge on prices of microwaves and televisions it doesn't matter because people go somewhere else or don't buy a microwave or television. Oil as a commodity isn't just a commodity like gold - it's like electricity, necessary and unavoidable in every day life. Its not like "all other businesses in the US" in that sense, and that makes a big difference, girlie.

Their profits should be heavily taxed when the price of oil spikes and their profits sore. A 400 percent increase in oil profits since Bush and a 200 something increase in gas prices spells "collusion."

According to The Washington Post: “US oil major Exxon Mobil reported $8.4 billion in first-quarter profit yesterday, as members of Congress outraged over high gasoline prices hastened to propose measures that would boost taxes on oil firms, open new areas to drilling and provide rebates to taxpayers but would not necessarily alter prices at the pumps.”

This puts Exxon Mobil on track to break the whopping $36 billion record profit it made last year.

Oil companies’ profits outside the US are also surging, with Shell and BP postiong combined quarterly profits of $14.3 billion.

The record profits come as US crude futures rose to a record $119.93 yesterday.

As long as the gas tax goes towards rebuilding and repairing the infrastructure, I have no problem with it.

great cartoon though.

If I were in front of Congress I would have started pounding them the second they tried to put the blame solely on the oil companies. I would have had a detailed list of every opportunity and request to produce more domestic oil and thrown it in their face. Then reminded the "holier than thou" idiots how much THEY are costing and "hurting" the citizens in this country.

First I would point to 48 straight fiscal year increases in our national debt. Second, the bird would fly. Third, I would sit back and laugh at them as they sat dumbfounded. Trying desperately to figure out how someone would dare talk to them in such a manner.

Oil profits up 400 percent since Bush, cost at the pump up 200-something percent. End of story.

yeah, because they went from LOSING money at $15/brl to making a profit.

When you look at their profit margin, it is lower than most other industries. The fact that the world consumes so much of their product does not equate to them having to take a lower margin.

That said... all oil subsidies should be killed immediately.

1) you do not have to travel (other than local)

2) You can choose to take public transportation

3) You can carpool

4) You can walk, bike etc...

Bottom line... I would be damn near everyone can reduce the amount of gas/oil they consume if they actually stop whining long enough to come up with ways they can do so.

Start here...

And those same idiots in DC bitching about the oil company profits just wasted $150 billion on a frigging bogus tax rebate.
